Wow I love this album on first listen. A few tracks that didn't stick out to me on the first run through, but I'm sure with more time they will. Nothing on here I wasn't a fan of. One little funny nitpick I have is how black honey ends, and I'm literally just talking about the last line and the last three guitar notes and how they don't match up haha. Does that bother anyone else?

Excited to hear this album! I'm gonna wait until it's available on Apple Music on Friday. I still have to finish my front to back discography listen. I've got Air/Earth, Beggars and Major/Minor left for tomorrow.

  4. all this talk of water fire and air makes me think the fire nation is about to attack

It's such a comforting feeling to be listening to a new (very good) Thrice record. I missed this band so much.

  10. Honestly as a "casual" Thrice fan, I'm not as keen on the Alchemy Indexes as most fans, but again without spoiling too much of my review I think this easily takes most of its influence from Beggars

But really, the last six Thrice albums sans maybe Major/Minor

How many albums do they have again lol

I hear a lot of The Alchemy Index -- all four elements, to varying degrees. I don't hear much Beggars or Major/minor. The end of Salt and Shadow reminds me a lot of the sonnets.

  13. 9 if we combine the AI into two albums and include IC.

I know it's getting some grief but "Stay With Me" is such a beautiful song. It makes me want to get married since Dustin seems as happily married as any musician out there.

sorta mixed on the first listen. thrice has been pretty important to me for a long time. and i did a good job of tempering expectations. hope the things i like here have staying power.

On my second listen, I'm really loving the end of The Long Defeat. The way the chords and Dustin keep repeating and fading is great.

Riley wasn't kidding, Dustin has some huge choruses on this

I wish they would've fleshed out Seneca more. I love the bleak, eerie vibe it's got going. I'd love to see it expanded on.

Yes...but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts

If someone would be kind enough to pm me a drop box of this album it would be greatly appreciated.

-sincerely, a man who spent $70 on a preorder and feels no shame.

I find that with Thrice albums they're usually growers - I haven't loved any of them straight off the bat, but always go back to them. (except M/M, which I thought was a disappointment overall except Words in the Water)

"The Long Defeat" reminds me of Face to Face's "In Harm's Way." The choruses have similar melodies.

Thrice are best when they slow it down a bit - For Miles, Red Sky, Words in the Water - I wish they slowed it down for a couple more on this one. That is my initial reaction. Everything seems a little too in your face by the end, and it loses its overall impact. It's kinda tiring to listen to the whole way through.

I love Hurricane, though; that's a great opener.

Interesting. I kind of feel like there is more down-tempo than I would prefer, actually.
