Idk, everyone I know who bought an Xbox got it for Halo.

That's pretty much my point though. Xbox exclusives, for the most part, aren't really a hit with gamers. No matter how good they are. Halo is important, but that's one exclusive. Both Halo 1 and 2 made their way to PC anyway. Fable as well. Same with KOTOR. I mean, the original Xbox had legitimate exclusives that weren't on PC but they're cult classics for a reason. Only a few bought them.

The 360 era was no different, other than Gears. There's a reason Microsoft stopped investing in their exclusives. There's a couple of really important ones that they have, but the Xbox brand has always been mostly known for being the most powerful console on the market. Why do you think the Playstation 4 has dominated this generation so thoroughly? It's not really because of exclusives. They've always had more than the Xbox. It's because it was also more powerful than the Xbox One. The Xbox brand lost what it was known for in the previous generations. I mean, why do you think Microsoft released the Xbox One X last year? It wasn't random. That IS the Xbox brand.

Most people I know who got a 360 got it for Halo or Gears. They may not have a ton of exclusives but the ones they did have were huge with gamers. I do agree that they don't care as much about exclusives though or think they're that important to their brand which is probably why they don't put out many great games, which only reinforces the idea that exclusives are important. If nobody cared about making great exclusives for their platform we'd miss out on a lot of great stuff.

My brother got an Xbox 360 for his birthday to solely play Halo 3 when it came out

I would have to make the argument that PS4 has dominated because of exclusives. I don't see it as a dick swinging contest where Xbox only cares about who has the bigger one. For some reason, they're falling behind in the exclusives department. I had an Xbox for years and decided to get the PS4 because I was missing out on incredible games such as Uncharted, The Last of Us, and recently God of War, to name a few. Thankfully I did because those 3 games were all incredible experiences.

It sucks because it costs us a shit ton of money but thats just the way it is.

I never said that the big exclusive Xbox does have aren't important. I was saying, in a general capacity, Microsoft has never much cared for making exclusives for the Xbox. It's not exactly new information either. This has been going on for years, even before this generation.

If that was true, the 360 wouldn't have outsold the PS3. Having tons of great exclusives isn't the Xbox brand. It never has been.

I assume you mean 4. Forza Horizon 3 is incredible. I wonder how they're gonna improve on it, if it's possible.

I think PS3 actually sold more than Xbox 360 or at least very close. Much different than the like 40 million units sold gap between 4 and One now.

The gap is small, but the 360 sold more. Though the Wii outsold them both.

360 had Witcher 2 and Fable 2/3 which PS3 didn't have. Those games are way more interesting to me than any Xbox One exclusive.

The “leak” said Forza Horizons 5 so it’s most definitely happening, shame that Forza Horizon 4 was severely underplayed.

there are sides to this exclusive argument that are being totally ignored. Nintendo exclusives are so damn good because they are built from the ground up with one very specific architecture in mind. if it has to run on Xbox One and PS4 as well, you inevitably wind up with inferior versions. that affects their reputation as a whole. i am glad they are able to fine-tune every experience to near flawlessness almost every single time.

to expect every game to run across every platform could effectively stall out competition in the tech department. in the current landscape, Sony can rush to the next big console with the peace of mind their second-party and in-house developers will keep up and give them a launch line up and the third parties will figure it out from there. without that dynamic we may run into a sea of developers likely reluctant to pick which side of the market to take a gamble on. then the losing side of the console market fades to dust and we have, low and behold, one console... essentially making exclusives absolute. do we want exclusive games or an exclusive console platform that can effectively set industry standards, down to pricing games and accessories and online services largely unchecked? there's no winning.

ill take the side that gave me Bayonetta 2.

Not sure if it's been totally hit in by anyone yet, but another side is the idea of a game being built from the ground up on a platform means that it can really take advantage of the platform it is on. Whether that is power (games like GoW and Uncharted looking gorgeous) or innovative and fun control schemes (mostly the Nintendo exclusives). With straight ports, those things are sometimes lost or not implemented to keep the experience the same across platforms.

Also could say less likely to run shitty if built from the ground up on a platform. No Batman on PC performance issues on most exclusives.

less serious (but should still be considered) point: nationalize gaming

more serious point: alternatively you're pricing swaths of consumers out of your games that's can't afford to have multiple consoles and can only afford 1 or 2 out of the 3 or 4. I understand in-house IPs like Mario for Nintendo, but third party IPs that are secured by outbidding other console makers makes me scratch my head. It's ridiculous to me that xbox users that want to play KH3 have to get a PS4 or PS2 and get copies of KH 1.5, 2.5, and 2.8 to get caught up on the story. Or that playstation COD players get the DLC a month early. If Nintendo wants to develop its own game to market its console better then cool, but buying exclusive rights to third party games is wrong I think.

Also, to me, it seems a lot of larger game developers that produce these third party exclusives for consoles are sending these games out rushed and not to their full potential. How prevalent has it been in this console generation alone that we have games that go to market and arrive broken that require a 6gig update patch day one, or are unfinished, or stripped of content to later sell it back as DLC?

If third party game exclusives are removed, then console makers are forced to compete even more. Maybe they make accessories or online subscriptions cheaper because now they're fighting for consumers to choose their console over another. Maybe they add better or extra features to get the one up. Maybe they reach an agreement with another competing console maker or all competing console makers to enable cross-platform play and compatibility. Maybe they add interesting or new tech or features like the switch with the portable console.

I think third party exclusives are inherently anti-player.

if you ask me, because you strip away exclusive games then we have an HDDVD vs Blu Ray situation. both platforms offer the same content, and someone wins and someone loses. then instead of exclusive games we have an exclusive console that can price itself and all related products and services at it’s will and influence the market as a whole.

if a console maker can't adapt and create new features, innovate, or provide reasons for consumers to choose their console over another other than by buying the exclusive rights to third party games, then what good does that console maker do in the gaming industry other than to scoop up games for themselves?
