Back when ‘Brand New’ wasn’t considered a curse word around here, I used to get so wound up with the hype and conspiracies and whatnot. They were downright ridiculous. Reading these conversations about altruism and the meaning of life in regards to a 1975 album just seems so...well...why are they going this route? It seems so misplaced with a band like this. Their lyrical content and subject matter doesn’t ever really get this intense or deep, it just seems really odd to me that they’re doing all this.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m beyond excited to hear new music by them, (I’ve been a fan since the first few EPs and met them a number of times), but I was exhausted with the rumours and allusions to new music long ago. Give us the damn music! (Please).

Sigh. It’s just my opinion. I get the depressing, emotional stuff, and the dabbling into existential crises and whatnot. But I’m trying to just say I think the current ad campaign is a bit MUCH is all. Not debate emotional impact. I appreciate my wording is naff and naturally I expect folk to disagree, though.

  13. I mean I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that maybe your wording was off there, but it still doesn’t make sense to assume an ad campaign like this is anything but necessary for a band that is clearly capable of delivering on it. We’ve heard zero songs at this point!

I’m just saying I think it’s a bit extra. That’s all. The band could drop an album after saying ‘new album mate’ and that would suffice. Whether the conversation transcripts with machines about altruism are ‘necessary’ does indeed remain to be seen given that, as you say, we have heard zero songs. I’m not trying to say they aren’t capable of delivering something of a high standard, just that I can’t see the content of the new music going THAT in-depth and analytical on such things.

  15. This is the band that sent out weird postcards with song names in lights around the world last time and spent the entire first part of their careers only doing things in black and white. They do weird shit to create an aura and aesthetic around their music and you can be into that extra stuff and it can enhance their artistry for you ... or you can just listen to the music when it comes out too. The band playing with the fan/artist relationship and crafting an 'era' around their music I find interesting because they do it in a way I don't see other artists even thinking of. The black logos over previous billboards is really clever and I think the concepts of art/social/tech and the relationships they bring and break and help and hurt is interesting, especially if the theme of the song/music plays into it.

It's well thought out, it's not just hiring or licensing some artwork and being silent for silence's sake.

Oh I’m absolutely about the aesthetic of it all, and there’s no denying it’s unique. Think it’s just a big leap to go from neon lights to this kind of thing. Then again I do remember the whole ‘old Matty choking the new Matty’ stuff. I admittedly enjoyed that. I appreciate a lot of folk are into the extras and I can for one relate, but personally I just found the recent stuff out of place (without musical context that will obviously be provided once the single is out). Not trying to start some big debate here haha.

For the life of me, I can’t understand criticizing the marketing campaign of a piece of art without first having experienced the attendant piece of art.

honestly the depth of matty's lyrics and themes is what's always separated this band from their peers in the pop/pop rock genre. matty explores extremely heavy and real concepts in a very human, sometimes imperfect, way that makes their music hit on those emotional levels much harder than other artists/bands in their lane. they were very careful about the way they even created this band, adjusting their name and image several times over until it was just right and the entire package was complete. they have an attention to detail in every aspect of what they do that is, in my estimation, entirely unmatched in today's music world. ILIWYS and the entire era it brought was an even more sophisticated and mature showing of what they can do when they put together a complete thematic, visual and sonic package that they stick to heavily for the duration of the cycle. i wasn't kidding when i said it the other day: this band picked up where my chemical romance left off. they were the only other band to really take that much care and time with their entire identity every single album cycle.

I wasn’t here to debate that haha. Nevermind. I appreciate my wording was off, and as a matter of fact, as the below post says, Me is a massively impactful song, and one that did a great deal for me. Clearly I’m not putting my point across well so I’ll just pipe down (I’m no lover).

I’m literally just talking on a forum about an album nobody has heard yet. What else am I meant to analyse? Forgive me for trying to create conversation? It was just a thought and I was seeing what everybody else thought. Sorry I guess?
