Eating at all of the lame college pizza places was your first mistake. That line of Pizza joints on Lancaster Ave is straight garbage.

Actual best cheesesteak I've ever had, in Philly but also ever, was at Jim's. That place is the truth.

So you're living in West Philly? I lived their for 4 years, there's def some great non-pizza places to go too. Apologies but I def need to reminisce:
    - Saad's Halal Restaurant on 45th and Walnut. Get the chicken maroosh sandwich and be ready to love your life. Go quick before they close for Ramadan!
    - Honest Tom's Taco Shop on 44th and Locust. Forget the name, get there early in the morning with an empty stomach and order a breakfast burrito.
    - Not food, but you should def check out Bluegrass Night at Fiume. It's a tiny dive bar on 45th and Locust, located on the 2nd floor over the Ethiopian restaurant. Go in the side door there, they have live music starting at I think 10pm on Thursday nights. (I apologize if you don't drink and I'm forgetting, but either way you should head over to enjoy the atmosphere.)

Out of all the mainstream ones, Jim's is definitely in the conversation for the best. They were shut down for half of last year though due to health code violations. Not sure if they fixed all that stuff.

Stop talking about the 1975, we're discussing the playlist, Cheesesteaks and Pizza for Cars

Now if you really want to be a true Philadelphian, go to Jim's on South St and get a cheesesteak. Go right down the block to Lorenzo's Pizza and get a big ass slice of pizza. Wrap the pizza around the cheesesteak and have the gift to mankind known as The Philly Taco.

One thing I've always been surprised about is how much respect Tony Luke's still gets despite being the most quote-unquote "sellout" place of them all. The guy sells his steaks frozen at the supermarket even haha.

They do make a good sandwich though, not gonna lie. Been in Philly and also one of the places they opened in South Jersey.

My sentimental favorite for a standard steak is Jim's, but if you're a cheesesteak fan you should check out this new joint Mike's BBQ that opened in South Philly a few months ago. They have a smoked brisket cheesesteak that shouldn't even in count in the cheesesteak wars, but it's the greatest fucking thing I've ever tasted. I'm not a whiz guy at all, but order it how it comes in this case... it's made in-house out of Cooper Sharp cheese (a local). The brisket tastes magical.
