Agreed. If you like the softer side of them check out Gore especially.

Also, if you like Chino’s vocals check out Team Sleep and Palms.

I haven’t listened to either of those side projects in ages, I should really go back to them. I loved Team Sleep back in the day, perfect album to chill to.

Haha cheers! Let me send you a message and we'll get it sorted. Sorry for the delay in anything, anyone following my posts will perhaps understand why I have been absent for a few days.

Let's get this going (also a review is coming tomorrow nightly finally, and another later in the week).

Great reviews! Now I feel terrible because I fell off the face of this thread before I did yours, even though I listened to your recs. Side note: that's Maynard from Tool/A Perfect Circle doing guest vocals on "Passenger" and he's my all-time fav vocalist

    Sink the Ship - Preserve

    upload_2018-5-8_12-31-47.png

This album art is pretty cool. Just look at it for a minute.

    Ok, now onto the music.

There is no musical build up with the album’s opener Second Chances, metal guitar riffs kick right in for 15 seconds before hardcore screaming starts and I was so down. I was really surprised when the pre chorus turned into clean, poppy singing leading into a chorus in the same vein. I did not see this coming as I had never heard of these guys. I wasn’t taken back in a bad way at all, since I love A Day to Remember and other bands of this genre.

The 2nd track Out of Here kicked in next and was completely with clean vocals which let me know this album wasn’t going to be purely hardcore verses/poppy chorus structured which was nice. Small variations in the song types kept things interesting, as well as adding in synths sometimes like the intro to Put Up or Shut Up.

Being into heavy music, I learned more towards the heavier tracks more like Everything and Nail Biter and Exposing the Hype. I also really dig the songs that did the pop/metal combo as well like the title track and Domestic Dispute. If you like this type of music, I certainly recommend it. The singer has a killer scream as well as some good singing chops and the band is on point all around. The two guitar solos on the album made me wish they let the guitarist cut loose a little more instead of typical chugging breakdowns for the bridges, but small complaint. I’ll be buying this album when I get home.

Highlights: Preserve, Everything, Exposing the Hype

Nice write-up! This album is on my "to listen" playlist still and I think I'll try to get to it this afternoon!

On an unrelated note, I listened to the new album by Colour & Shade this morning and I thought that was a pretty good one. They're an alternative/metal band from Melbourne, Australia (obligatory @Mary V mention!) and it may be something up your alley!

War On Women - Capture The Flag (2018)

So I had @bachna84 last week and he gave me War on Women's latest album to review, sorry it's taken a while to get round to this. I've been pretty busy and as this albums fairly aggressive it's not been the easiest for me to check out when all I've wanted to do with my spare time is chill.

Right so I had heard of War On Women before but only as far as hearing the odd track here and there, all of which were prior to this release. They play straight up punk music with an hardcore edge to it and their lyrics are very politically charged (they even label them selves as feminist-hardcore punk), think bands like Propagandhi, A Wilhelm Scream, 7 Seconds.

So like I said before it took me a little while to actually get round to listening to this due to other stuff going on and me not being in the mood to checking it out, plus the album starts with a really fast aggressive song which didn't help that either. I'm glad I did finally get round to this today though as it bangs, I stuck it on while I was out cycling in the Sun today and it was the perfect soundtrack to get me pumped while out riding.

They to go between straight up hardcore punk songs with shredding guitars and shouted vocals to other tracks which sit on the more melodic punk side of things where I find their vocalist Shawna really shines. When they explore their more melodic side of their sound they remind me a little of some of the Riot Girl bands of the 90's but with a fast punk edge to them where the guitars still shred but you hear the emotion come through on Shawna's voice.

I haven't really sat with this album long enough to really delve into the lyrical content properly but they're as confrontational as you'd expect from a band that labels themselves as feminist hardcore-punk. Which in this day and age with all the pop-punk by numbers bands it's refreshing to see.

Basically in summary I haven't listened to this enough to do the review proper justice but on the listens I've given it I've loved it and I can see this album growing on me a lot more once I've spent more time with it. Thanks for another awesome rec @bachna84

Favourite Tracks: Silence is a Gift, The Chalice and the Blade, Anarcha

RIYL: Hard and fast Punk music in a similar vein to Propagandhi, A Wilhelm Scream, Heartsounds

    Cocteau Twins - Treasure
    [IMG]
Without a doubt the most unique and unusual recommendation I have received so far, Coteau Twins are a trio from Scotland who achieved critical and relative commercial success in the 1980's and early 1990's. Treasure was their third album, and first with bassist and multi-instrumentalist Simon Raymonde, who appears to have had a major influence on their sound.

Coming from the Falkirk area of Scotland, the trio blended indie rock, dream pop and post-punk sounds in a way that instrumentally can often remind of The Cure, one of my own favourite bands. Second track "Lorelei" is driven by some fantastic bass lines and interesting synth patterns, whilst third track "Beatrix" features an almost operatic vocal performance from vocalist Elizabeth Fraser whilst bass notes bend in the background, curving around ethereal synth.

"Persephone" is more drum heavy on the intro, with guitars rising to prominence through out, with the notes and riffs reminding me of The 1975's "Love Me", in a good way. "Aloysius" is in the second third of the album and slows things down with slower picked guitar and actually represents a nice change in sound for a brief period, whilst the final track "Donimo" has a grand, operatic feel to the vocals, with choral backing, and the song ebbs and flows nicely through different sections.

Despite this, my true gripe with this album lies in undoubtedly its most divisive element, the vocals. Elizabeth Fraser is undoubtedly talented, a possesses a great range and natural melody. However, often I found myself being slightly annoyed by some of the more shrill notes, and I never truly settled into the album because of it. Alongside this, as someone very lyric and emotion driven in music, I found the totally unintelligible lyrics to be off putting and it prevented me from really latching onto the album.

Overall I thought it was difficult to rate. I loved some of the music itself, but the vocals were just not my thing. I felt bad putting the rating down, as I'm sure for other people the vocals are the highlight, but it wasn't for me.

    5/10

    Highlights: Lorelei, Persephone, Donimo

  22. SPANISH LOVE SONGS - SCHMALTZ (per @Larry David)

The album has a lot of great lyrics, and the energy in a lot of the songs makes me just want to crank my speakers up to 11 and ignore doing work completely for a few minutes. This album will be a good one to blast in my car during these warm afternoons. I got way more into this as it went. "Buffalo Buffalo" is probably my favorite track on first listen. Most of this album reminds me a lot of The Wonder Years if Soupy shouted more than trying to hit notes. Not saying the vocalist here isn't a good singer, but he's basically a shouty Soupy with Connor Oberst kind of shakiness, which is kind of a neat combo meal.
