The opening scene of this movie was almost as good as the ending. Set that emotional tone RIGHT away.

I liked it a lot but definitely less than everyone else does. Probably because I'm not a huge fan of spy movies or Bucky.

I was making a joke because Star Wars sucks.

And I’ve been saying if I was in this fandom and waited 10 years for this movie I’d be pissed. Literally fuming.

I've watched every marvel movie and the emotional impact was non-existent.

I waited 10 years for this movie and loved it. I thought the emotional impact was existent when it needed to be.

I'm not gonna tell you how you should feel about it because that sucks and I hate when people on here do that, your feelings are your own and it's cool, but I think most people in this fandom knew going in that this was originally set as IW Pt 1 & IW Pt 2, they changed it last year to have just one main IW movie, and the next one, while still a continuation of this, will not be named IW, it will be a separate movie but still continue this story arc to an extent. Idk if the whole next movie will focus on this resolution, but I imagine a good portion will. If you went into this blind, and it was your first MCU film, I guess I can see where you might be like hey wtf guys.

Personally I loved it, but it's not without it's flaws obviously.

I'm not gonna touch your SW take tho.

Star Wars is ace, especially the latest movie in the franchise.

I loved the way Infinity War ended. Sometimes heroes will meet someone they can’t intially win against.

    Thank you all around haha.
And I just have seen zero people refer to this as any kind of part one (until AFTER I saw it and voiced my criticisms) I also saw several articles that stated this is a standalone movie that you don’t need any background to enjoy. That’s how they are promoting it, so that’s where my confusion and criticism comes from

Yes totally but IMO if there’s a second part there should be some kind of alluding to a second part. There was no cliffhanger here. No “more is coming. Just everyone dies the end. That’s a terrible ending. Especially because you know that black panther Spider-Man etc all have movies coming soo like how does that work?

I've also seen a ton of this and you're right it's so misleading. Like, yeah you don't need to see any of the other movies to understand the plot of this one, because they clearly communicate everything in a pretty natural way, but you do need to have a background in the other movies to actually care about the characters, what happens to them, and their relationships with one another.

For real. I had people messaging me after I posted a status being like “are you lost? Do you need me to explain it to you?” Like, it’s a super hero movie guys not a calculus problem. I think my feeble brain can understand the plot :eyeroll:
And I’m p emotional and empathetic so I had no trouble caring about them. I teared up when Loki died and I knew him for all of 2 seconds lol

    oh also,

"When I heard we were opening up Wakanda to the world, this is not what I had in mind"

    "What were you thinking?"

"I don't know, the Olympics? maybe a Starbucks?"

one of my favorite lines haha

I more meant along the lines of, like, someone who hasn't seen Iron Man 1-3 and also Civil War probably wouldn't fully understand why seeing Stark and Pepper Potts together again at the beginning is a big deal (and also why his decision to leave with the ship and her frantic call to him as the ship is leaving is so heartbreaking). Like the development of their relationship and what they've been through together are told over the course of three films and also a single conversation in Civil War.

There are just certain stakes and emotional beats for the individual characters that it would help to have seen the other movies to know about, and a lot of the reviews are kind of minimizing that.

I tried to quote your edit and we just missed each other

Anyway stuff like this would enrich the plot for sure but it’s not like a plot hole without it. It didn’t get in the way of me “understanding” anything lol

Right, the plot was shockingly clear and coherent for film so filled to the brim with characters, setting, and events.

That's the arc of every superhero movie. Killmonger beat Black Panther, and I'd argue that defeat was far more resonant because we were led to buy into his motivations and vision, we could see it tangibly and knew what it meant to Wakanda and to Erik and to the outside world, and even if we were sure Black Panther would come back and win, T'Challa's morals and ideals are challenged by the Erik's and the hero grows because of the complexity and nuance of the villain. It was an actual journey, not half of one presented as a whole. Even in Empire Strikes Back, the cliffhangers are built into character: Luke learns the embodiment of the Empire he's been determined to stop is his father. Han and Leia's romantic story, which is actually given lots of screentime to develop, is interrupted. Empire wasn't back to back to back to back to back action setpieces. It was all character growth. Luke on Degobah. Han and Leia on the run. It was mostly a movie of quiet, small moments, bookended by action that's made so much more rich for all the time spent understanding the people involved. Infinity War is almost entirely action leading to more action with maybe 10 minutes of total screentime dedicated to character growth, and that feels generous.

Totally! Also like even tho I haven’t seen any of them it’s not like a live under a rock. I know vague things and knew who all the heroes were except scarlet witch (and vision) but even without knowing who she was she was one of my favorite characters

I explicitly said I haven’t seen any other marvel movies and that I hate Star Wars so no I’m not gonna read your 3 paragraph break down of both of those

I would put it in my top 3 with the first Avengers and Winter Solider. They are in no particular order because I get different satisfactions with all three.

I like her take. Killmonger, Zemo, Loki, Vulture, and Ego are all more interesting villains in the MCU, either their motivations are more complex and realized, or they're just more fun to watch. I'd even put Robert Redford's character from Winter Soldier as a more subtle, insidious representation of villainy than the MCU generally presents, and if you want to include Bucky from the Winter Soldier as a villain, he at least gets cooler action setpieces than CGI Grimace. I know few would agree, but I also enjoy the Guy Pearce/Ben Kingsley villain dynamic from IM3 for it's boldness more than I got anything from Thanos for his paint-by-numbers adequateness.

When the stakes are as huge as wiping out half of life in the universe, it ultimately matters so much less than when it's one character faced with saving their world along with the larger context: Batman faced with choosing between Harvey Dent or Maggie Gyllenhaal in the Dark Knight, Peter/MJ or Peter/Gwen in the Maguire/Garfield Spider-Man movies, Logan helping the next generation of mutant kids escape, etc. All those movies ended with the superhero "winning", but at a permanent cost.

I’m trying to see how this is a “self-contained story” like the Russo brothers have said stated in interview. The way I see it is that this film will have to be viewed as a Thanos story and not an Avengers story. If seen as a Thanos story, it’s a complete journey as he begins and accomplishes his mission while watching the sunrise and relaxing once it’s done. It would be similar to watching any heroes be confronted with bad guys and then rising up and defeating them only to celebrate right before the credits roll.
