  1. I don't know why anyone would have complaints about this movie when we finally got an answer to what happened to Red Skull.

So it can’t exist for the sake of bringing these characters together to somewhat complete a story the movies have been alluding to for years? It has to have a “deeper” message so that it can be considered art?

Agreed it does. But your viewpoints of the objective topics on the piece of art is by definition a subjective opinion. If you make a statement about how objectively this is bad because xyz, then you by default think anybody else with differing in that statement is objectively wrong, even when in the consensus may be overwhelmingly opposite. Not talking about this movie just in general.

This is why I say art is mostly subjective because you saying they "failed" when they are regarded as some of the best movies all time by fans and critics and one winning 11 Oscars. Who determines whats objectively good then? Not saying you SHOULD like them or even you should think they are even objectively good movies. Simply putting the conclusive label of "failed" when by every measurable account of objectivity says they succeeded in telling that story doesnt add up to me

Agreed and sorry if I gave that impression. Im not saying the movie IS good for that reason. Just better than it wouldve been had it not been.

Fair enough. I personally loved Thanos because he mainly had this movie himself and time to develop and have read and seen a lot of reviews that also loved him because he had his own story. Ill also agree its a movie that is held up by other films. But I think if you love the films before it, it works because it is like a TV series. Not using that as a defense that its good or bad, just that it will work for people.

Curious as to about how you view it as predictable though. Maybe him getting all the stones and all was predictable, but what do you assume is going to happen next? Obviously they are going to beat Thanos and all (its a superhero movie after all), and the OG Avengers will pass the torch to the new avengers but I have no idea how at this point lol

For the record Ill say I dont think the movie is perfect or anything and dont mean to sound like a blind defender of everything about this movie. I do think its very scattered and not very focused and all, but I still love it despite those things.

  5. And I feel personally justified about my Civil War complaints now, which is funny because I was also told "WAIT FOR THE PAYOFF" during those discussions. And .. I was right! They botched it.

  6. If "we just wanted to put people in a scene together" is the only reason for existing, I think it's fundamentally flawed. If your reason for existing is just to bring characters together, yes, I think that's very poorly thought out storytelling.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on how this story could have been told better, sincerely.

This movie is 90% cool fight scenes and 5% “witty,” tension-cutting dialogue. Thanos is the only character who gets a moment to breathe and have something resembling thematic elements.

I don’t get what reason there is to be mad or disagree with this. Nobody’s saying you can’t like it. I enjoyed myself for the most part. But it is what it is.

We set the bar high. This movie has been the most anticipated comic book film ever.
For me, it succeeded and then more.

A potentially better alternative would be to say “fuck it” to the idea of shoving in every single character, and instead maybe have, idk, a bunch of different movies that focus on one or two specific dynamics. Like I would be down for a movie of just Doctor Strange, Stark and Parker. Ragnarok did it well enough

  14. What? No it's not.

Consensus has nothing to do with objectivity. If I think there's a flaw in storytelling, and explain why, that's not an objective viewpoint. Just because I also address subjective parts of art does not remove the objective ones.

It's not regarded by many Tolkien die-hards in this way. And even people that discuss the merits of the film itself talk about how they failed in what I specifically said: the ability to tell that story. It's an adaptation, and one I and many Tolkien nerds are not particularly fond of. Winning technical Oscars is great, good for them ... I still believe they missed a very core ingredient of the Tolkien books. Holding up technical Oscars has nothing to do with what I said about what's missing from those films. (And that's before even getting into the disaster of the Hobbit films.) And none of this negates that there are also objective qualities to aesthetic judgment, again, me talking about things I feel doesn't change that this also exists.

I mean, do you really want me to tell you? Everyone's so scared of spoilers. I'll hash the prediction somewhere.

I like the idea of a 6 hour Infinity War epic. It won’t be nearly as long as LOTR which I enjoy watching in full once a year. The story of Thanos, his journey of getting the stones, and the fight to stop him once he accomplishes his goal is a story that deserves multiple hours to fully capture.

It’s a miracle it was told this good the first time. Let’s save second chances for A4.

  21. My entire childhood was Marvel comics so I’m probably a bit biased on the film. But overall I really enjoyed it.

I think in terms of themes the Marvel universe has always mainly revolved around morality and this film seems to have a few different occurrences of people having to put their own feelings or loved ones aside for the "greater good". There's a number of times this shows up during the movie and different situations have different outcomes. I think even Thanos' plan is an example of this on a grand scale. So if there is a question this movie is asking, it's "do the ends justify the means" or the trolley problem. Which is honestly pretty standard superhero stuff.

Yeah. There are no groundbreaking themes in this movie. No arguments there but I felt like the themes in this movie were treated with more care than usual and I appreciate it when it feels like a creator was serious with their product.

  24. Uh, ok, but that doesn't address anything said, so ...

  25. You really think this? I'm gonna argue most of these movies have given us a pretty fucked up view or lesson on morality if this is the argument. Our heroes "morals" have been, in many cases ... very bad.
