Avengers: Infinity War (Joe & Anthony Russo, April 27, 2018) Movie • Page 57

  1. Ok, I know I complained about Bucky just shooting his gun the whole time, but that moment where he picks up Rocket and spins around was one of my favorite moments of the whole movie.

The Only Death That Matters in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
What worries me is the absence of purpose. After 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and this year’s Black Panther, the possibility and flexibility of a Marvel movie had been renewed. We learned that complicated visions of racial politics could sit comfortably beside throwdowns with vicious war rhinos. In that way, Infinity War is a regression.

Back from seeing this a second time. I'll still spoiler tag because I know some people haven't seen this and it was my mistake previously not to do so (rectified) but I'd be pretty pissed myself if I stumbled across them.

I'll keep it short; took my sister who is a casual fan and she was shocked to the core, actually silent, at the fact BP and Spider-Man were "killed" off when these new characters are basically the new forefront. I still think that the deaths pre-snap will be permanent though and I can guarantee Marvel will do that.

My only hope is that the destruction of Xandar leads to a Nova movie.

This movie isn’t satisfyingly or resonantly about anything.

I don't know that I agree with this article as a whole, but there's certainly truth throughout it.

Ultimately, I really loved this and would easily call it my favorite Avengers film, but yeah, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther had more to say. (I'd include GOTG2, not for politics, but for what it had to say about family and trauma.)

Still, if I compare this to Marvel event comics, I personally think it fairs pretty well. It's not as good as Hickman's Secret Wars, but it's way better than Millar's Civil War.

I gotta chuckle at some people’s misplaced expectations of what this movie was supposed to be

  7. The solo movies are better vehicles for meaningful storytelling. Infinity War is lacking in character arcs for the most part, and it's juggling so much already, so I feel like trying to get across any sort of social/political commentary would've come off as half-baked. Idk I don't make movies. Maybe I'm giving it too much credit and something like that could've been done.

Still, flaws and all, it's a cinematic achievement of episodic filmmaking. I'm still amazed that Marvel and the Russos pulled this off.

I've enjoyed just scrolling past every post that looks like a giant black blob.

Also, this thread is gonna get weird for me when the arguments about this film really get going. I love this whole thing with no reservations, but I'm probably gonna get annoyed by a lot of defenses of it, lol.

Super fun, but yeah, no real emotion. I'm not complaining though. I love it for what it is.

Yeah, I can totally understand where a lot of the criticism is coming from and think a lot of it's valid, but none of them bother me at all. I had so much fun with every second of it and I'm so happy that something like this exists.

I think the individual movies will still be where the more important/personal stories are told which is how it is in the comics too. This is a certain type of spectacle that not everyone's going to be in love with and that's fine.

  13. As a vehicle to sell me more movies it worked well. It didn't say a whole lot or defend its existence much though. Meh. Whatever.

I feel like we have to remember this is only one half of a full story that they are trying to tell.

  16. I think critics, with some validity, would just see that as an excuse. Or a marketing ploy to force people to watch the next one.

  17. I mean, they had three hours to say something ... the idea they need six isn't really an argument that makes me think this is better.

I hope somewhere near me shows this back to back with the sequel next year so I can enjoy it as a six hour movie.

I do personally think that it has emotion. Or at least it does for me personally, though I'm sure what I'm personally bringing to the film has a lot to do with that. Still, I did really connect with Gamora, Thor, and Wanda's scenes.

And, for a movie about a McGuffin made out of 6 smaller McGuffins, I do think they did an alright job of establishing stakes. Avengers 4 could still botch the landing, but I feel like the way the stones were used here hints at the reversal of the snap coming at a cost itself.

Still, saying that this doesn't say anything isn't wrong. Everything it hints at was said way better in GOTG2 and Ragnarok. For all the death and tension and action, it really is largely spectacle for spectacle's sake. It just happened to be my kind of spectacle/escapism. But, it totally could've been this kinda crossover event and still said something (see: Hickman's New Avengers into Secret Wars).

And, defending this as half a movie is something I can't get behind. I personally really like how it ended and think it works as its own arc, with the sequel possibly having its own arc as well. But any critiques can't be dismissed by pointing to something due out in a year that doesn't even have a name yet. If this doesn't work as its own film, that's a valid criticism, regardless of if there's another half.

Anyways, I'm done posting for the night, lol. I have things I need to get done. :peace:

I haven't seen it in like four years so maybe I'd feel differently now but I had trouble getting through it then so I don't plan to try again any time soon.

Are we supposed to keep using spoilers right now?

There were just so many fucking scenes where character x needed to kill/let die character y (who they love) in order to succeed, and I’m well aware that those were supposed to be the tense, emotional, serious scenes of the film and all, but god, given the stakes it’s like really? I get that the characters themselves have faced plenty apocalyptic scenarios and came out unscathed, but given that this is supposed to be *the* movie that the MCU has been building to for a literal decade, them trying to save Vision / Quill hesitating to shoot Gamora / Gamora wanting to save Nebula just seemed so insignificant. Like really, Gamora, you’re willing to die to keep the Soul Stone hidden (as you should be, given that you know what happens if you don’t) but you crack almost immediately when Thanos almost kills Nebula? Doctor Strange saving Tony was the only one that made sense considering he clearly knew it needed to happen. And if anything, Thanos killing Gamora was by far the most emotionally satisfying of all of them, because Thanos knew and accepted then and there what needed to happen.
Which, speaking of Thanos, I know it’s been said a million times already but this really was his movie. He’s a genocidal, Malthusian maniac, but by the end of the film I *cared* more about what happened to him than I did anyone else (though the dust scenes did hit pretty hard; cutting out the music worked really well).

  23. The problem I have with that, in and of itself, is that it's entirely predictable what that probably will be. I'm sure most people here have already figured out what the reset/reshape is going to be. And that really hurts replay-ablity even in the "spectacle" level for me. I don't see a reason I'd ever be interested in watching this again, let alone needing to sit down for 6 hours of it.

Yeah I dont really care about making arguments about whether a movie is technically good or not. Art is subjective. Just giving my experience.

Im saying the whole story works better for me having it be six hours long and giving it time to develop. Im saying theres a whole lotta shit they had to do in this one story that it had to be two movies, because a six hour movie wouldn't be very practical. Just like LOTR needed 9 hours broken into three movies to tell their story. This needs 6 hours broken into 2 movies.

They needed a whole movie establish Thanos as a full character with motivations, they had to give backgorund to his relationship with Gamora, he had to go on a quest to find 5 different soul stonees and they had to give 26 or so major characters enough screen time to please everybody whos come to love these characters over 18 movies and a story that made sense trying to prevent Thanos from accomplishing his plan.

If you wanted one movie for this story (Parts 1/2), ALL of that stuff would have needed to be compressed which I think wouldve have been disappointing and you wouldnt have cared about whatever happens in the latter part of the story because Thanos' development was cut short.

Just how I see it. Wish you couldve enjoyed it more though! I for one loved it.
