His album sales are down because he doesn’t seem to particularly care about them anymore. Yeezus was the last physical music item he sold; I would imagine this new one sells more than his last one if he literally just puts it out on the date he said, given the messy rollout for Pablo (came out Tidal-only on a Sunday morning).

his albums have been selling less and less since late registration iirc, can't imagine that's a motivation but who knows

exploring the socioeconomic plight of black people over the course of at least five of his albums (808s doesn't really go there) is certainly "thinking about politics" i think

Can we stop giving him any benefit of the doubt that this is a stunt for album sales, or controversy for controversy's sake. It's plain as day that he simply believes this shit and wants to align with it.

Like people have been saying, it doesn’t really matter whether he does believe it or not at this point. He owns this forever now, there’s no coming back.

I don't think he deserves any benefit of the doubt for saying these things for publicity. I think it would be even worse if he went against what he believed for publicity, than if he really believed what he was tweeting.
But it does not seem like a coincidence he is tweeting controversial things and creating worldwide headlines right before his new albums come out.

This will hurt him most in his real life relationships with people, artists, and loved ones more than it will hurt him in terms of sales. I haven't spoken much about this because I'm honestly still processing, but I do think this is a misguided attempt at stirring the pot. I guess we'll see on Friday, though I'm not sure if it even makes a difference at this point. It's weird-- it's like he took account of who his fanbase was and where they are politically-aligned, and then completely alienated them in one day. Just doesn't really add up considering how much he loves being loved.

    I don't really know.

Been thinking about this stuff since last night when I started scrolling through this thread.

Kanye being shitty doesn't surprise me, I'm pretty sure everyone here that was still on his side was doing so with the understanding that he was an inherently problematic person and would eventually take it too far. Though I didn't expect too far to mean aligning himself with fascism.

Chance though, chance bums me the fuck out. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention but I thought Chance was out there doing positive things, not getting Don Jr. to call him a forward thinker causing cultural change.

Is this about Chance saying the next president will be independent? It’s laughable because there’s not a chance it will happen.

  11. All of Kanye’s music is political—but on that note something that really upsets me about this is the conservatives that won’t engage with everything he’s said in the past about Reagan, Bush, the AIDS epidemic, the spread of crack in inner cities, the fashion industry’s racism—none of these people believe in that shit. They just see the left’s favorite rapper in a dumbass hat and want to weaponize that image to antagonize liberals or whatever. If Ted Nugent or Kid Rock or whoever suddenly came out of the woodwork calling himself a progressive I’d tell him to fuck off and walk the walk before they can talk the talk. I think it goes to show that the alt-right/Pro-Trump movement, whatever you want to call it, is gassed up more by pissing off the other side than any actual semblance of policy or beliefs.

I mean yeah that’s all true but their hypocrisy has been exposed time and time again and it doesn’t matter. Kanye is still legitimizing bullshit ideas as “truth” and “dragon energy” and that’s actively harmful, especially to impressionable kids who look up to him and people like chance

Well yeah, the alt-right is partially made up of internet trolls that get their socks off by being controversial and pissing other people off for laughs. Kanye always had the same motivations as them.

What did Chance say that’s problematic? Is there a tweet other than “the next president will be indepdent” that I missed?

“Black people don’t have to Democrats” is the one really being spread by the alt right. He also defended Kanye’s mental state saying he’s always been like this and it’s fine. He’s kissing his ass instead of challenging his bullshit, which isn’t that surprising.

  16. Yeah I’m not jumping to Kanye’s defense here. Fuck him. What he’s doing is stupid and dangerous. How disingenuous the MAGA clowns on Twitter are being is just also fucking frustrating to me.

tbf this is true and something many folks agree with. but you don't gotta be like Kanye and elevate someone like Candace "You're Victimizing Yourself" Owens to make that point or associate with the alt-right or conservatism at all.

The problem isn’t the statement itself, the problem is Chance’s offering it as a response to people raising an issue with Kanye’s fascist turn. No, black people don’t have to be democrats, but it’s not a binary where the only other choice is right wing extremism. Chance is being willfully obtuse.
