Who is pretending they aren’t part of the system that produces the tools they use? Especially if they are actively conscious of the violence and harm of that system? You gonna tell me all the Black Lives Matter marches need to have asterisks stating the organizers used the most efficient organizing tools available to them?

  5. The only person making the argument that we don't know the horrible ramifications of capitalism is you. None of the people talking about this have 'pretended' that we don't know the ethical and moral pitfalls of this system. Many of us not only talk about it a lot, but are actively involved in trying to stop that too. [Some of the lobbying, in fact, recently got Apple to look into buying cobalt directly from miners.]

Man it’s pretty fucked that Ebro made Kanye’s opiate addiction public like that now that I am rewatching his but about their convo.

I'm not trying to say that you're unaware of the system you're participating in, just pointing out that you are in fact participating in it. That's great if you're actively trying to change things. I just find it a little troubling that people are so up in arms about something a rapper tweeted, yet they continuously contribute to far worse causes simply because it makes their day-to-day life more enjoyable or easier.

Wait, am I the only one here who posts his messages by first typing it with a typewriter and then delivering it to a capitalist friend who then uses their iPhone to post it using my log-in credentials so as to avoid any potentially hypocritical entanglements when I take a moral stand?

    Get woke, people. Jeez.

Edit: And before you come at me, yes, the paper is recycled.

if you're actually conscious of the violence and harm of the system you're participating in, why are you participating in it?

Never said I wasn't complicit in this as well. But I'm also not boycotting Kanye over a tweet.

lol what are you even saying or trying to prove at this point, this is annoying and pointless.

  12. Because the alternative is living in the woods as a scavenger, for one, and for two, if I go do that, I'm not actually contributing anything to fighting the system, so really I'm perpetuating it just as much

  13. uh because it's either that or die?

So you are participating in a shitty system AND not taking a moral stand when an opportunity presents itself.

    Got it.

So you die if you don't buy products that support slave labor?

  17. Your hot takes on this subject are incredibly classist and you're being deliberately ignorant if you are following all of this and still come away with "this is all happening over one tweet". Longtime fans are struggling with the reality of who Kanye keeps showing himself to be and you aren't helping.

Arguing in favor of maintaining the status quo - "If it isn't perfect then why do anything to improve the situation at all" - because of flaws in the argument or improvement turns life into a zero sum game and does nothing but protect the current system but go off I guess.

this is like asking a fish to stop swimming in the sea. the oppressive system of capitalism is pervasive. unless, like ben said, you wanna live in the woods off the land (but you're still subject to its consequences like pollution, deforestation, etc) you have to participate. it will take the complete dismantling of capitalism as an economic system and a reorganizing under a more human socialist system before anyone in modern society can purchase and distribute goods in any sort of ethical fashion.

I should have known better than to say anything in the first place. There's no chance at actually having a discussion with people that already have their minds made up. The only reason you think it's okay to support Apple for example, is because it's a luxury that you enjoy. I enjoy Kanye and feel that he's causing less damage to society as a whole than Apple.

This is like pointing out that I'm breathing, that I have two eyes, ten fingers, and a couple ears. If your core argument isn't that someone is 'unaware' of something, why would you need to point out to them something by your own admission you know they know?

First, because there are real world ramifications that stem from words. Contributing to and perpetuating rape culture, for example, I think is worth being up in arms about. Platforming a number of people that are, at least tangentially and in some cases actually, aligned and related to groups of people that are actually murdering people, I think is worth being up in arms about. So, while we have alt-right men walking into buildings and shooting people right now, I think it's not super important or helpful to play the game of "which is worst;" I'd in fact argue they're part of the same whole, but that's a different conversation. The idea that one can't participate in society, while criticizing it, I think is facile thinking. Your argument, and the language ("find it troubling"), treats many of us as children unaware of reality by bringing up basic tenants of philosophy and building block ethical questions we thought about, in some cases, like a decade ago.

  21. I agree that Kanye causes less damage to society as a whole than Apple, are you just making up arguments?

  22. Some people might. Extremely poor people for example will have to buy necessities as cheap as they can find them and the cheapest things often have the worst labor practices. What are they supposed to do?

I still can't believe "kanye is giving a platform to people who spew ideas that light a fire under white supremacist which cause tangible harm to marginalized communities, I am internally struggling with supporting him as an artist" "oh yeah, but you use an iPhone so who's really the bad guy here?" has turned into a semi-serious discussion.
