Sink has become an ear worm for me, that Chris part before the chorus gets me every time

Live acoustic thing they did this morning. There's something horribly wrong with the kick mic, but besides that I'm not into the arrangements and they really don't play or sing incredibly well either. Really disappointing. There's a video of them playing Reinventing a couple months ago on youtube and it sounded great, so I know they are capable of doing something good acoustic, but this was so underwhelming.

Just rediscovered the band Dead Poetic thanks to an article I stumbled upon by accident. I'm so happy I did, I was in love with them back in the 2000s. Highly recommend the album New Medicines for fans of old Underoath, Armor For Sleep, Hawthorne Heights, etc.

I think this album is substantially better than Sleepwave’s album, FWIW. Not that I think most of it is *that* similar anyway...

I love the sleepwave album but there are so many glaring differences.

I actually got a few Dead Poetic vibes from the album opener here.

MCR Black Parade tour did that. It was actually kinda cool.

I’m surprised by how much I keep coming back to this album. I think it’s really good. I hope the next album keeps going in this direction but incorporates heavier/breakdown moments from DTGL.

I would include LITSOS in that hope, but that album is literally perfect. I wouldn’t change anything about it.

That's an apt comparison, actually. Bon Iver (2011) had some hints that Justin was going in the 22,AM direction ("Hinnom, TX" and "Beth/Rest"), but his time working with Kanye on MBDTF, Watch the Throne and Yeezus seemed to reflect strongly in the latter album. Reviewers and fans of his previous work absolutely gave him shit for it. Folks dug it. Folks hated it. But there were comparisons to his side projects and collaborations.

The amount of triggered replies and belabored *sighs* in here just because someone doesn't agree with your subjective tastes is ridiculous. My first quote in this thread was "i'm glad these dudes are in a better place now, happy making music together, i just don't like the output", but any dissenting sentiment is brought by a handful of "jeez you idiots you're so stupid for not thinking this is in their top 2 of all time". It's silly and dumb, and as much as people shouldn't be @ing the band to complain, Pop-Underoath stans shouldn't act like they're the ones that wrote the music that people don't like, and take it a little less personally.

Deep breaths guys. We'll get through this together.

The same could be said about Underoath. Aaron was doing the Almost & playing in Paramore (more pop/radio friendly), Chris was apparently doing sound design and scores, Spencer created Sleepwave (alternative/industrial rock), Tim created Carrollhood (ambient/experimental rock), while also producing/recording hardcore bands. All signs pointed to this. It's only a bit of a shock because it doesn't sound exactly like the Underoath from 6-8 years ago.

I'm not stating that this is their greatest record, because it's not, but people shouldn't be shocked & appalled by the product they received. I would much rather have every album sound different, than for them to take the August Burns Red approach, where each and every album they release sounds exactly the same.

Sounds like the mic hits something every time the kick hits. During the last chorus of rapture you can hear everything cut out and it's just the kick and it's not doing that, so who knows. There's something weird going on for sure. They definitely weren't hearing that while they were playing. However the kick idea is so dumb. Aaron does that when he does his solo stuff and it's so unnecessary.

I totally agree on that last point (and I think your first point was kind of what I was saying?), but I'm just personally surprised they ended up backtracking stylistically instead of heading in the same direction their discography was on. Every album was at least slightly heavier, slightly more interesting or slightly more experimental than the last. This one feels like what would have come before TOCS in the radioplay<------------------->experimental spectrum. Suppose us old guys end up being less metal as we age, though, so it makes sense.

Sunburnt and Unsound were considerably less heavy and experimental than Disambiguation though. I feel like they might have been hinting at this change in direction even before they broke up.

If I could just forget it

I think if the album were mixed to sound like sunburnt it would not be getting quite as much hate. To me that song really does sound like it would fit on Erase Me.

Totally. I think if Erase Me had the more raw production of those 2 tracks more people would have liked it.

I think I actually like On My Teeth less now than I did when it was first released. In Motion is probably my favorite, but those bonus tracks are a lot of fun.

  24. I understand why points like are made because sure, in the past, the newer sounds explored on Erase Me are not what you’d expect to hear when putting on an Underoath record. But the question you have to ask yourself is “do I like these songs or not?” It’s senseless to say this would’ve made a great Sleepwave record but a bad Underoath record, because regardless of your expectations for it, you either like the record or you don’t. To add a caveat to the tail end of your true opinion of these songs is most definitely to be playing mental gymnastics.

Also I’m well aware that I’m late to this conversation and I’m not calling you out specifically, more just that mentality as a whole

the thing is sleepwave only existed because there was no underoath for spencer to write in. now that underoath is back, spencer is using it as his outlet and has no need for sleepwave anymore. It's no secret how I feel about this album but it's fairly obvious why this album did turn out the way it did.
