The entire situation of being trapped in a dark, flooded basement with an instant-death monster while holding your newborn child just to watch it disappear under water is so impossibly scary.

Saw it today and although it was super intense I didn't really find it scary, and I'm usually bad with horror movies. I wasn't a fan of some of the cheap jumps they used ( My biggest scare in the movie is when the girl was gonna go in the basement and fucking Tuna grabs her from behind), but overall I really enjoyed this a lot. John did a great job both in front of and behind the camera, and Emily Blunt is fucking incredible

Really happy for everyone involved in this

for a world where the smallest sounds can mean life or death you would think they wouldn't do things to startle each other so much

but if they're the only ones left and Jim is out of the picture who is going to continue it? We talking Adam & Eve / incest situation?

There are other people within the vicinity when they light up a signal fire at night near the beginning.

  7. I thought this when Emily slammed her bloody hand on the glass after having the baby. Instead of feeling relieved I was mostly just like ummmmm aren’t you supposed to be quiet??

and the scene where the brother grabs the girl's leg from under the truck really quickly, like give a signal, or a warning tap!

That was happening during the fireworks right? That's much louder than whatever noise they were making

so I was so excited once I learned it has ASL in it to talk about it with my ASL professor
I thought it was going to be praised in the Deaf community for including asl, and having a Deaf actress play the Deaf character...
but I guess there's a lot of contention around the plot of the movie because the Deaf community is fairly at odds with cochlear implants. The movie kind of implies that "cochlear implants save the world"
before anyone argues I'd just like to assert that in this case we the hearing people need to listen to the Deaf community because they are the marginalized ones here.

  12. Was it explained why the dad didn't want the little girl to walk down into the basement? Why wasn't she allowed

I read about that kind of stuff in my ASL class too, so I get the critique. There's a pretty rough history against sign language and trying to force kids to read lips or hear at any cost.

The movie doesn’t imply the cochlear implants save the world. It implies that high frequency sound does.

Yeah honestly that argument kind of seems like a reach. Then again, I am not deaf, so I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about!

I think the hearing aid doing that was more supposed to be about the dad promising to the wife that he would always protect the kids. In the end, he does, by adding the extra amplifier to the hearing aids

that's the way I took it too, but you and i are also hearing. I'm just being messenger for the Deaf community.

    bolded for emphasis lol

and it wasn't a hearing aid. it was a cochlear implant. Specifically my professor said, why couldn't it have been a hearing aid? or for that matter a radio or anything else that can emit high frequency? why did it have to be a cochlear implant? Literally the community is joking that the cochlear industry "paid for the movie" because it paints it in a really good light even though most Deaf people aren't cool with the industry.

literally the purpose of my comments is that yeah, to the average hearing person we take the movie one way and view it one way but when you are Deaf you view it an entirely different way. I think it's our job to listen to marginalized people, especially when they are the ones being portrayed.

My guess is that they chose the Cochlear because it’s a more visible device that allows for an establishing shot/small reminder.

And that many, self included, don’t realize there’s multiple devices in deaf healthcare with pros and cons. I saw it and thought “hearing aid, oh she’s deaf that’s why the family knows sign language” which I’m guessing was the purpose of the choice.

What are you confused by? She’s bringing up valid criticisms of the movie that the deaf community has.

Just because it doesn’t have an agenda doesn’t mean that a community represented can’t have a concern and feel a certain way about how things are portrayed. There’s nothing wrong with that.

The movie is still very good, but there still can be a criticism about it and that’s okay.

Yeah that’s fair. I deleted my post cause it didn’t really add anything to the conversation anyways

I’m not very well-versed in the differences between the two, for me they have always just been called hearing aids as a general term. I meant no offense!

I think the father sacrificing himself to save his children was more about protecting his children than the cochlear implant.

The cochlear implant and the father's endless attempts to create one that worked just showed how much he loved his daughter.

I'm hearing as is everyone else in this thread (just assuming based on conversation), but I'm involved in the Deaf community and I'm sharing with the hearing community what the Deaf community is saying.
    Thus, I'm being the messenger.

I really love the movie, and I'm not saying this criticism takes away from that. Thanks @Joe4th for stepping in while I was away.
Like I said, I myself did not view the film or message that way. But I still think it's important to hear what the Deaf community is saying and respect their viewpoints since it has to do with them, not us.
