if I'm a fan of the headliner I like when they play 75-90 minute sets and the openers get 30 minutes each

no house/DIY show should ever have more than 2 combined hours of music

House shows are still one place where I don’t care if like 6 bands play.

that sounds like literally the worst thing because nobody cares about most of those bands anyways

That’s exactly what I like about house shows. I usually go to them to support newer acts and get exposed to things I haven’t heard before. If I’m seeing a major artist in an arena I don’t want any opener so they can play for hours, but a local house show? Definitely.

that's the problem with a local house show having like, 6 bands. people lose interest and it makes them enjoy every band they don't know less. i'd rather have fewer bands so people can be more engaged

maybe it's just because I'm turning into a crotchety old man but I played a 3 band house gig a few weeks ago and it was the best. We played at 8, everyone was dancing and having fun to each band, the music was done just before 10, I was in bed at 11:30. Loved it

6 bands on a show can also mean most people turn up late because they don't want to stand through 4 or 5 bands they don't know, so then the bands on early play to hardly anyone.

Definitely disagree on 2 hours tops because I prefer headliners to play for around that long. I saw The Cure play for 3 and a half hours and it was incredible!

Earlier shows I am always ok with, no matter the number playing. Can’t stand the 10 PM start time on a weeknight shows I see listed all the time.

I saw Bruce Springsteen with my family a couple years ago and he's great but I started falling asleep like 2 hours 45 mins in

I mean that’s true for every show anyway. I can’t tell you how many sold out shows I’ve seen in big venues where the place was empty until five minutes before the headliner. Even if it’s just one or two openers.

I'll take it a step further-no band should play more than 25 minutes tops unless they're headlining. preferably on a 3 band lineup, 4 maybe.

and yeah if i'm at a house show or a show that's mostly local bands, no one should be playing for more than 20 minutes. not about to sardine myself in a ratchety basement while 5 local bands figure their shit out

Ehh I mean I’d be very disappointed if a direct support band I love, like Foxing recently, only got 20-25 minutes.

If it’s two bands, I’m fine with 30 to even 40 minutes for the opener and an hour+ for the headliner. For 3 bands, 30/40/60

I’ve never left a concert thinking “damn, I wish the band I like played less songs”

I guess it all comes down to if I like them or not. A 40 minute set drags if I’m not into the artist, whereas it’s too short if I like them. I’m absolutely always in favor of longer sets for people I’m a fan of

I feel like the average show length is fine

    Openers: 25-30 mins
    Direct Support: 40-45 mins
    Headliner: 55-90 mins

The only time where I was like "Damn I wish this band was done" when it was like a local opener that got added last minute, and even they usually play right at doors anyways. (Also when I saw Crown The Empire open for AA/BVB and had to accept the fact I'll never get into them)

I feel like it all depends on the bands, the atmosphere, how interested you are in that particular band, how long the band's songs are, etc.

For sure, that’s why all the blanket “never” statements seem weird to me. Sometimes I want to see an all-day festival, sometimes I want to see a free 30 minute acoustic set, sometimes I want to see a legend play for 3 and a half hours with no breaks.

Already gonna be up north to see Camp Cope in Toronto and Philly so that Three Stacks festival is looking mighty tempting.

yeah, i think the most important thing is the show should be done by 10-11 no matter what.

There is no way in hell that Atilla of all bands can do well in a 2,000 cap venue in 2018. No no no way. Everyone loses money in that scenario. Hell, that NYC show will probably get demoted to a 500 cap venue.

I saw Brian Fallon last night and he had one opener/was done by 1050. It was a great change of pace from most shows.

The only show that ended after 11 I've ever seen was Silverstein, which ended around 11:15

But thanks to Minneapolis' early curfew, most shows end by 10 here (Meanwhile suburbs are usually 11)

most of the show problems i see come to overzealous pop punk/metalcore tours that want to do five band bills or just bad local promoters

  25. I once watched 7 or 8 bands play before Dikembe in a basement and it was probably the worst four hours of my life.
