no because english is dumb. You can't just look at a word and say how it should be pronounced. The point is, there are enough examples of "gi--" being pronounced with a soft g that you can't say "that's how English works" as an argument for why "Gif" is pronounced with a hard g.

If you wanna pronounce it with a hard g, nothing is stopping you. But soft g is also an acceptible pronunciation.
