City talk time: Guys I kinda want to move to North Jersey. And experience NYC.

I have family in Jersey and always considered it, but I had a lot of misconceptions about the area growing up. They live in Princeton which is like, all lawyers doctors and graduate students, way too ritzy and expensive, and then everything between Princeton and New York is ugly and smelly as shit & Trenton and Newark are boring cities with horrible crime. The social class barriers in the biggest suburb state in the US seemed intense and it made me hate the idea of New Jersey.

But ive been looking into it and that Northeast corner past Newark actually isnt as much ugly city grime, its where the mountains of east PA/upstate NY begin so its hilly and green, and there's a lot of parks. They also have light rail into the city, south / central Jersey does not, so I won't have to fight Lincoln Tunnel traffic or pay a 28 dollar toll to get to a 12 dollar ferry. Its a 45 minute trip that costs like 10-12 total.

Rent is also nowhere near as bad as I thought. Ive been living in a house without a roommate for awhile now and the cost of splitting a 2br apt up there is actually less! I'm seeing 1100 for 1br (sometimes 12 or 13 with utilities included which is about what my house costs), 1500-1750 for 2br. Not bad at all, totally doable for me.

There's also a fine dining restaurant I have worked at before in the area, in Weehauken right across the river from Midtown Manhattan. I still know their whole script, I could stay with my aunt and uncle till I got hired.

Dudes who live northeast, what do you think? I play music very seriously (and have tons of solo material), obviously having access to NY and Philly would have a much higher ceiling for me than Jax or Baltimore did.

You should try looking around the New Brunswick area. I live 20 mins south of New Brunswick. Significantly lower cost of living compared to NE New Jersey. Taxes and rent are outrageous up there (e.g. Bergen County). You can take the train from New Brunswick into NYC.

I would recommend Hoboken or Jersey City if you want to live in that area

further south, Princeton or New Brunswick are nice too and you can be in NYC within a 45-60 minute train ride essentially

I should be going back to Pensacola in June/July. I’ll tell my friends in Tallahassee/Pensacola to go/keep a lookout! What is the name of your band?

I don’t know much about that area, but does it have to be Jersey? All of the states in that area are relatively close to each other, are there areas nearby in other states that are cheaper that allow the same access to major cities?

Yeah I lived in Tally for about two years, we live in Orlando at the moment. Grew up in Alaska and Pensacola!

I live in Bucks County (like 15 minutes from the NJ border) and it is SUPER cheap to live here

my mortgage is ~$1,500/month for a 3 bed/2.5 bath townhome with a finished basement and fenced in backyard

I can be in NYC (by train) in 90 mins or Philly in 30-45 minutes

What train do you ride to NYC? And how much does it cost? I guess the research I did didn't give me the full picture of NYC transit. Is it like a Jersey owned line and then you transfer at a Newark train station?

  14. dotKev

    @dotkevin

I have a similar mortgage for a comparable home near New Brunswick. I guess it depends on whether you want to be closer to Philly or NYC.

I drive to the Hamilton station in NJ (15-20 minutes by car...Trenton station is a few minutes closer, but is way seedier) and then take NJ Transit directly from Hamilton to NY Penn Station. You don't have to transfer anywhere and the train ride is like ~80 minutes or so. I think it costs $30 round trip.

My band's called Terrain. As a band we're kind of like progressive indie-rock / punk (we get compared to At The Drive-In, Fugazi, and Dinosaur Jr a lot) but I'm more of a folk-punk artist solo (Nick Drake / Elliott Smith inspired guitar but with loud / aggressive vocals at times). I've gone with and without a drummer a lot for various reasons, so both sounds are associated with Terrain at this point.

I'd probably do the solo thing for awhile if I moved to NYC area. But I do prefer having a band if I have the right people.

OH shit, see yeah I was trying to avoid having to transfer too many times and pay too many separate fares. I didn't know NJ transit also took you straight into NYC. i was just looking at NYC metro maps, and Google Maps which I'm learning is totally useless for any mass transit that isn't the bus.

So much more expensive though. And my experience living in city apartments has told me that I'm better off just split-leveling a house. Because if you can afford a city apartment... there's a reason why it's affordable usually haha. Lots of them are falling apart, or lacking something that makes it very uncomfortable. Plus I'm looking to have my gear set up and be able to play when my downstairs neighbors leave for work, can't do that in a bigger complex.

They need to make an Evil Patrick meme that says "musicians working nights so they can make ungodly amounts of noise Tuesday afternoon"

I always wonder what drummers do, I just assume they have electronic sets or use practice pads until they travel to their studios for band stuff

I'm jealous seeing the talk of mortgages half of what mine is. I love living in Seattle but god damn is it expensive here....and you probably have a bigger backyard than I do, too.

New Brunswick is great because it's basically in between Philly and NYC (plus has great bars & restaurants).

Jersey City is your best bet tbh. Path trains are $2.75 to get into lower Manhattan, and then another $2.75 to access all NYC Subways. I can usually get to Williamsburg BK in 45 min or less. Hoboken is way too expensive

My mortgage for 4 br 3 bath house is roughly $1600, which is also the average price for renting a one bedroom apartment in the Denver metro area lmao. It's crazy here
