My sister swears by hers and we used to workout together on skype until my laptop blew up. We would go super hard for 30 minutes and only burn like 350 calories. That's some bullshit right there lol

I never had any problems with mine but it didn't really motivate me to exercise either. It worked for a ton of my coworkers tho so that's cool

In the UK, calories, fat, sat fat, sugar and salt content are usually also listed on the front of the pack and each one is individually colour coded: green, orange or red. So you know when you're eating a pasta salad with a lot of bright red that it's not gonna end well haha. Do you have something similar in America?

i'm writing a book, leave me alone.

No. The nutrient info is in the same order but almost always on the back of the package. A lot of products with now say, "WITH WHOLE GRAINS!" or "15 GRAMS OF PROTEIN!" but neglect to also tell you that item comes with 4,000 carbs.

I believe everything these days (in the US) is supposed to have nutrient info readily available but I've eaten food at a few smaller stores / franchises that don't have the info easily available on packaging, website or google search.

Also the big catch is catching the whole "per serving" thing and finding out that a serving of some things is like, 1/8 of a fucking cup.

Oh I hate the per serving thing. Like who eats just 30g of cereal? And no one eats half a pack of chocolate - come on!

I have a Jawbone Up2, and I like it. I've had a couple different Fitbit and Jawbone models, and their functionality is all pretty much the same, this one is just the most low-profile/un-fitness trackerish. I think my default goal is 9,000, and I tend to only hit it on days I run, because 1. I have a desk job, and 2. I live 312 steps from where I work. So at the very least, my "commute" and walking home for lunch gives me ~1,200 steps. I do find that the twice-hourly movement reminders do actually help. They sort of snap me out of "hey, you've been sitting here looking at pictures of baby sloths online for 30 minutes" and remind me to get up and walk around for a couple minutes.

Nutritional facts are required on food packaging, and some products (breakfast cereals, mostly) have the fat/sugar/sodium/carbs also printed on the front, which is helpful. I'd love the color coding -- that's such a good visual.

  13. Do you guys/gals work out in the morning or the evening?

I really want to start getting up early and working out in the morning. By the time i get home from work, I don't want to do anything and it's hard to get motivated. But it's also hard for me to get motivated to get up at 6am. So what do you all do and are there any methods that helped you break your motivation struggles?

Always after work for me. I am not a morning person and could not teach for a whole day after that. My trick is usually that I walk in the door, change, and head right out. If I let myself sit down, I tend to lose an hour like it's nothing.

Both. Right now I'm running 3 days each week, and for those days, I get up at 6 and get my run out of the way in the morning. Then at night I usually go for a 3 mile walk with my wife (or by myself if I'm traveling). On my off (from running) days, I still sometimes get up early and do a short bike ride or something like, but sometimes not. I find that if I force myself to get up early and exercise, I usually feel a lot better throughout the rest of the day.

Might be a dumb question, but, aside from when excercising, when I'm sitting at a desk at work all day, does water have a positive effect on weight loss?

Choosing water over any other option will always reflect positively on your health. Black coffee and tea with no additions are probably the only liquids outside water that will never count "against" your health.

Even if it's, like, 64+ ounces?

You'll run a little heavier with "water weight," but your body will expel any water it doesn't need. Take your weight, multiply it by 2/3, and that number gives you the amount of ounces of water you need a day.

So for me... 175 x 2/3 = 117 ounces of water a day on days I do NO exercise. On days I exercise, increase all the way to 1:1 at 175 ounces. Other philosophies are take your weight, and drink between a half ounce and ounce for each pound. So with 175, I still need between 87.5 and 175.

All other liquid you drink, whether coffee, soda, beer, or juice, counts against these ounces. But the best for you is always water of course.

I have been a long post-work person, but for running I have been getting up in the morning when possible. That leaves my evenings after work free to do yoga and lifting sessions.

I drink a load of water. I refill my Nalgene bottle at least 5 times a day.

Calculating it, between coffee and water I definitely hit 120oz a day.

I don't drink quite as much water as I should. Probably around 70oz/day.

Going off of those water recommendations, I am probably close to getting enough, but probably slightly under on some days.

I need to drink more water. My work recently gave everyone free infuser water bottles where you can add in mint or fruit or whatever to flavor it. When I'm craving water I can drink a ton but it's getting me in the habit that's tricky
