That's what happens when a guitar band goes with a pop producer. The guitars get treated like pop guitars and pushed way back

Surprised how Aaron heavy this is. Album is ok only finished my first listen now. Need more time with it.

Aaron wasn't in the band for my favorite underoath album :chin:

I hope Aaron handles the incoming critisism of this album well. The negativity really seems to get to him based on some defensive tweets of his. I feel for him, he seems like a really great and genuine guy, and it's gotta suck to put in so much work for people to really hate on him for it. I wish nothing but the best for these guys, and even though I'm not huge into this album, they're still a great band that I really really want to see live.

On my three listen through so parts are starting to stick out more. I know it got dogged a lot, but I think Wake Up is a really good song. The singing on it sounds really good and I dig the melody. I know it may be jarring for a metal band, but just as a song I don't see anything wrong with it.

manchester orchestra’s last record is a pretty good example of a band working with pop people but still keeping the instrumentation interesting imo

The half-time bridge in Bloodlust is so good, I just wish it didn't abruptly stop.

After a few listens I'm definitely enjoying this release, no matter how different it is. Only personal gripe is that Spencer's cleans sound similar to Aaron's and I've always thought dual vocalists work best when the timbres contrast. Just glad they're back and creating again.

Don't have access to the Doc. But listening to the Lead Singer Syndrome with Spencer really shed some light on the songwriting of this album in comparison to their older material. Seems like Aaron and Spencer always preferred more straightforward pop/ rock writing and Tim and others preferred more experimental/ heavy sounds. Seems like they reached the halfway point on this album.( Although many would argue it's more straightforward rock)

Also the haters came out in droves today. Damn. Glad the reception here isn't indicative of the overall reception of the album. It seems to be selling pretty well.

Weird speculation all over this thread.

Hey @Jason Tate, way back in the thread you mentioned you would have gone with a different song for the second single. Which song was that?

That probably would’ve gotten more people on board/open with the release. If that makes sense haha.

I'm kind of glad they didnt because I wouldve been really disappointed with the rest of it since that one and On My Teeth are two of my favorites.

I just came here to say I'm absolutely in love with this album. I was a bit worried after hearing Rapture, and it took a few listens for the album to click with me in it's entirety, but when it did, i believe they killed it with this one. I've had it on repeat all week, and I'm just stoked this band is back and I hope they're able to gain a new level of success with this album.

Favorites: No Frame, I Gave Up, It Has To Start Somewhere (love the breakdown on that one)

If wake me isn’t gonna be a single, and thank goodness it hasn’t been yet, makes me wonder why bother including it at all. That said, if I heard it on the radio I’d Shazam it, I think the verses are actually quite good, it’s just the obvious black sheep song. Even rapture I think fits just fine.

On a related note, without that song the gap between first half and second half is much more in style than quality. IHTSS, OMT, and bloodlust are all terrific. Ima write up a track by track soon. As underoath are my favorite band of all time, I was just as emotionally invested in this release as anyone, and if I can get behind it despite it not being what I wanted, most should be able to.

Lurking AP since 2005. Lurking Chorus since 2016.

Not according to the documentary. They said time wrote the music first and they added vocals later. This is the first time they didn't do this.

Yeah, that would've been a much better-received single than "Rapture". "Rapture" had me worrying about the album. On the other hand, "Hold Your Breath" is a banger and I really like it.

I found that record super boring. Pretty much the same as this. But honestly I like this record a lot more.
