    Cursed by my ancestry

Funeral blew my tiny little mind at 19, I still think the medley works pretty well.

I figured out what I don't like about orange grove, it puts on full display a lot of things that bother me about soupys vocals especially the verses

Hanif is the bee's knees. Have you read his book, They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us ? Also I think that bio is in the liner notes of Sister Cities too.

Bonus points when you find one with him wearing a Greatest Generation shirt.

  7. Yeah it was my favorite book last year. He recently did a poetry workshop at my MFA that i was lucky enough to be a part of. Really cool guy and one of my favorite working writers. Seeing that he did the bio for TWY was very exciting hahaha.

The chorus of “Kyoto” briefly reminds me of “archers...” chorus in terms of some of the vocal melody

I agree. While I like reprising lyrics..sometimes it does come across as lazy. It hasn't bothered me as much with TWY but the example I always share is the "Sleepy Eyes & Bony Knees" lyric that Real Friends can't seem to stop using.

Then again...maybe TWY does that too (I'm not sad anymore, etc.) and I'm biased since like them and I'm not at all a Real Friends fan..

They haven't used "I'm not sad anymore" as as a lyric in 8 years, though.

I wonder if Soupy helped write the ending to the closing track, while watching Friday Night Lights. It sounds like it could fit right into that show.

Damn. This album was okay, it just isn’t clicking all that much with me unfortunately. It all kind of feels like one loooong song, and the predictability of the melodies made some songs really drag. Maybe after a few more listens something will stick. I prefer No Closer to Heaven at the moment. The lyrics are very personal, and I’m sure those who grabbed the booklet preorder made an awesome decision there.

I’m glad others seem to be enjoying the record though! It just goes to show the range of sounds the band has developed record to record throughout their career

I can't get Raining In Kyoto out of my head. Best song on the album methinks.

It's really good. I expect a lot of these tracks to grow on me as well... that being said, a few more grabbing hooks could have really helped speed up that process. Faves are Raining in Kyoto, Pyramids of Salt, and It Must Get Lonely... pretty front-loaded for me.

Where can I find the booklet with the lyrics? Guess I could just wait until my vinyl / book came in...
