The reason i posted that is because nobody was offering anything other than their own disbelief at the comparison, as if it was so incredulous that factors in both rap and metal can be shared. Personally i find it easy to see the comparison, seeing how with 808s and yeezus, kanye veered from his traditional more-lyrical and maximalist approach and focused his songwriting with more synth and less classical instrumentation, also shifting his vocal style (just like underoath are doing with this record).

It seemed like the comparison was taken less seriously just because its kanye, which imo, is bullshit

i mean i love kanye like kanye loves kanye. but I don't see this similar to 808's or yeezus. if anything I would consider Ø closer to Yeezus. this is a lot more straightforward than Ø, while it is a personal opinion Kanye always ups his game in one way or another with later albums, whereas this seems a step down on what UØ were doing previously. which is where I think the comparison falls apart. they're trying something new like ye always does, but they aren't taking themselves to the next level on a songwriting level.

i mean that's how I see it. it's just not a comparison that works for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hold Your Breath is pretty cool.
I cannot believe how much it sounds like a Thrice song to close out

can we not compare an album (i haven't listened yet - i could end up loving this) to fucking 808s? like can we please just not do that? what is there to gain from that conversation?

Lurking AP since 2005. Lurking Chorus since 2016.

I hope this song gets expanded upon in the documentary a little. I would love to see more about the process. The little 1.5 minute clip was cool.

Yeah I mean I haven't heard the album yet. And I'm sure it's nowhere near 808's. I guess I was just defending the right to compare UO to Kanye lol.

So I think where I've netted out on 2 full days with the leak:

    1. From 'Bloodlust' on is fantastic, and I really love the direction they went.. I could easily just skip the first 4 tracks, however.

    2. There are some legit moments where I can't tell who's singing which I like.

    3. Can definitely tell Chris had a lot more influence, and was given more freedom to play around with the atmosphere, though I think that came at the expense of Tim's contributions. There's some really heavy industrial moments. Glad he incorporated some actual piano moments, that I really enjoyed.

    4. I do see this getting some mainstream play and getting them a lot of more casual fans (ala how BMTH pivoted on "That's The Spirit"). I can definitely see a large group of their fans totally saying "nah" to this album, but I think they will more than make up for that with new fans. Luckily their discography isn't going anywhere, and people can enjoy Underoath in the way that they choose. We know they will play it all during their tours anyways.

    5. I've loved seeing Spencer's growth over the last 10 years in terms of what he tries to do with his vocals.

    6. As much as I enjoyed Daniel's contribution on Disambiguation, I really missed Aaron's drumming. He did a fantastic job on this album overall.

Completely agree with this. Tim’s riffs may be a bit diluted this time around but if you’re paying attention there are enough elements to soften the blow.

Also in regards to the TOCS discussion, it’s worth noting this is easily their most diverse record so that’s gonna color opinions a lot. I have a hard time calling a song like Wake Me particularly mature, so the hooks and lyrics of TOCS blow it out of the water for me. But then the maturity on something like No Frame puts most if not all of TOCS to shame. Depends on what you’re looking for and how you weigh things. I don’t think TOCS’s goodness has to rest on nostalgia, but there’s a lot to love on erase me too. I would agree with that he comment earlier that it sometimes feels a little incomplete.

Why did they title a song "ihateit" - just looks so fucking stupid when it pops up on my phone.

Love the "God Erase Me" part in the song.
Don't like the lead in of "wouldn't change a fucking thing"...a little cheesy

Both Yeezus and 808's were initially hated by many fans. 808's turned off a lot of people, due to the focus on singing & autotune, and Yeezus put more emphasis on the sonics & song structure, rather than the lyrics (something which Ye was always known for), and people were pissed.

Many fans believe MBDTF to be his magnum opus. Its dark, its emotional, its self-reflective, and sonically the production & mixing is rough, which IMO is everything that Disambiguation is. Im sure many fans view Disambiguation to be UO's magnum opus, though you could make the case for almost any of their albums post TOCS (same with Kanye post College Dropout).

TOCS & College Dropout both catapulted each artist into the limelight of their respective genres, each created a specific sound that each artist would expand upon, those specific sounds would go on to influence future artists who would then attempt to emulate that sound. Both albums met with critical acclaim.

DFTGL & LR continue to progress the sound of each artist, using different methods to achieve a more "grandiose," sound, both releases top their previous, both releases met with critical acclaim.

LITSOS & Graduation, each album furthers the progression of each artists sound, both releases are once again met with critical acclaim, both albums are more futuristic or forward thinking, both albums show that each artist is at the top of their game, both albums show that these artists are in a league of their own, both albums show that these artists are impossible to put into box because they continue to reinvent their sound & style, while continuing to capitalize on it, each album marks the end of a trilogy (for kanye it was the actual College trilogy: CD, LR, Graduation. For UO it was with Aaron and the maturing of their sound: TOCS, DFTGL, LITSOS).

    Disambiguation & MBDTF:
Each artist at their darkest, most vulnerable, emotional, and self reflective. Both albums sound extremely rough, in production & mixing. Song structure is hectic & chaotic, lyricism is still a focal point, but we begin to truly hear just how "busy" each song sounds with the odd song structure, various samples, bass lines, synths, drums, filters for kanye, and riffs, synths, samples, effects, bass lines, and odd song structure for Underoath. Both albums are a lot to take in, but both became adored by their respective fanbases & even seen as each of their best work.

    Erase Me & 808's/Yeezus:

Complete departure from the sound they progressed to perfection with LITSOS/Graduation, and that sound they both then molded into a different monster with Disambiguation/MBDTF. Production sounds like they traveled through time, lyricism takes the backseat as song structure and sound design are set at the forefront; take the minimalism approach. All albums are met with mixed reviews from respective fanbases, extremely divisive, and where Ye leaves behind rapping for singing on 808's, Spencer leaves behind screaming for singing as well (both leave behind lyricism on Yeezus/Erase Me). Critics also seem initially divided as well.

Im sure I could go on, but that's it for now, and this is all just my opinion. Im not saying these artists sound anything like, just their progression, in a way, is similar.

I still don't see the linkin park comparison at all. If anything some of the later choruses make me think of Three Days Grace or something like that. Especially ihateit.
