Sink with you, it has to start, hold your breath, no frame, in motion and ihateit are miles ahead of the best tracks on TOCS imo that is.

I'd take Young And Aspiring over any of that.

on track 7 now, and so far i just want to listen TOCS...

i could listen to that album over and over forever. i like DTGL a lot too, but less than TOCS. the ones after that, i couldn't care less about. they're not quite my style. this new one is closer to TOCS and DTGL, obviously, but this isn't hitting hard at all... nothing has got me pumped up and craving a re-listen so far.

but there are some rad parts, for sure!

ihateit is actually really cool. ilikeit.
hold your breath has a rad chorus.

Given how friendly this site usually is to popification I’m shocked the reception isn’t more positive. Then again, took me several listens to get here too so with time, it will happen. With more listens you catch the more hidden yet trademark UO sounds.

I have a hard time saying it’s better or worse than TOCS. That album is very much a product of its time but it’s still insanely catchy.

I also have a bit of a hard time saying it’s the album they *all* wanted to make. Spencer has said he wants to scream less, and i think this is very much his record, and Chris’s too I suppose, but it sounded like Tim wanted heavier. Can’t imagine he enjoys taking more of a back seat creatively.

Maybe the reception would be better if it was better executed

yeah, I'm all down for poppy Underoath. My favourite songs of theirs are the "poppiest" stuff on DTGL, I just think this is bad.

Lol to each their own. But it's just plain nostalgia affecting that choice imo cuz the songwriting of those songs compared to the new ones are miles behind. Again just my opinion

Also listening to this really demonstrates how annoying Aaron's vocals could be at time on those hooks on previous albums, especially TOCS. don't hate them just not the biggest fan of his

DFTGL has no pop on it.

You can't tell someone it's just nostalgia that they like something then say imo like it legitimises that.

Massive lol at you making a completely uninformed (and incorrect) statement about nostalgia blindness and couching it with 'in my opinion' enough times to take the weight off it.

This might have better "songwriting" than TOCS.

But I balk that nostalgia is why people think the last 3 UO Records are the 3 of the best records in the genre.

    I do not exist.

Has Tim done any interviews in the build up to this release? I've only really seen interviews with Spencer and then a couple of bits with Aaron. Has Tim said anything about this release? Would love to hear it all from his perspective.

I mean I don't like this album but I'm struggling to see how this stands out on a songwriting level.

To me, this is logical progression & conquering a new sound that you haven't really explored completely. I enjoy the songwriting on this album a lot, but I would love to hear some more intricate songwriting on the next album. Underoath (with their current lineup), have never made a bad record, and will never make a bad record.

I cant take any metalcore/posthardcore fans serious who say this record is bad, but praises August Burns Red, when ABR have made the same record 7 times.

I’m pretty good at discerning when my enjoyment of something is purely nostalgic and I really don’t think that’s the case for me with TOCS. I’m not gonna deny there’s none there whatsoever by any means, and there’s absolutely stuff that hasn’t aged well on it. That said, I genuinely think some of the hooks on it are good, and feel more inspired and enjoyable to me than most of the ones here. I also think that, while far from their most impressive guitar-work, I enjoy what it’s doing on that album more than this one. Lyrically, neither album is great, it’s basically a toss-up there.

Idk, it’s still very early, but at this point I can safely say there are a solid 5 or so songs from TOCS that I’d put ahead of even my favorite on here. I hope that changes, this is admittedly growing on me.

I mean objectively speaking there can be no other explanation for preferring such a song over these new ones. The writing on that album is boring and plain. Vocals are Mediocre at best and lyrics are cringy and painful to read and listen to.

I'm not saying nostalgia is the only reason for liking it. I never made such a claim I'm saying this

    - the only reason one may prefer TOCS over Erase Me is more than likely due to nostalgia

One may argue that it could just be preference of music , but even that is again influenced by factors such as nostalgia. Which isn't necessarily a negative thing , just stating it as is

    "Objectively speaking"

    FUCK.

  23. JM95

    hmmm

You've certainly changed your tune from 'in my opinion'.

But "objectively speaking", nostalgia is the only reason for liking it above the new songs?

    You're all over the place.

So there is no objective standard when comparing an artist's discography?

Objectively speaking the songs on TOCS are weaker .

Imo it's nostalgia that's responsible for someone preferring TOCS over this

Objectively speaking referring to the quality of songs . My opinion is why they are preferred. I chose to say objectively speaking because apparently me saying that is "taking the weight off"...
