    March in Review:
Now we're getting into the good stuff. March brought in no less than 3 albums that I'm relatively confident will be in my top 10 at the end of the year. (I've included my Q1 Top Ten List at the bottom of this post.)

This month was bookended by the new Lucy Dacus and Kacey Musgraves albums, both of which bowled me over by pursuing entirely different narratives than I expected, given their prior work. Lucy Dacus' Historian jump-starts with lead single and song of the year candidate "Night Shift", before turning away from romantic relationships to taking in the fuller picture of her life. The songs are dense and beautifully textured with a number of different instruments, but Dacus' voice is front and center to deliver lines that drip with sharp, matter-of-fact humor and deceptively strong hooks.

Conversely, every note of Musgraves' Golden Hour sounds like it has been filtered through pure sunshine, with songs that largely expand on the warm romance of "Late To The Party" from her last album. Lyrically, the open-ended platitudes to love are a bit of an about-face from the tightly constructed, winking couplets of her previous work. Yet there's a soft sonic cohesiveness here that belies just how many chances she's taking with her songwriting. It makes me want to sway and hold someone.

I guess anticipation is a dangerous thing, because Field Report's Summertime Songs is another March album that went down entirely different when I was finally able to dive pass the appetizer into the full meal. It's a chilly, redemptive song cycle that feels miles away from the wide-open-road escapism of its lead single and album title. Yet the album's rewarding in its own right, a collection of emotionally raw but fully fleshed-out folk rock stories with lyrics that I want to read over and over. It's the best album-length storytelling I've heard in a very long time, and I've been listening constantly to better piece together the latest chapter of Christopher Porterfield's life. (Man, "Field Report" is such a great name for this band.)

I've already seen some great concerts this year, but nothing compares to Bruce Springsteen's one man show "Bruce on Broadway". I'm still thinking about how it felt, sitting quietly in the presence of a rock legend who is literally exposing every facet of his life in the name of connection. The show was filled with acoustic performances that forced listeners to focus on Bruce's words, with monologues from his autobiography that brought them into new context. If Springsteen shows are typically big tent revivals, this is more like a confessional, stark and intimate. Go see it if you can.

Top 2018 albums of the month:

Kacey Musgraves, Lucy Dacus, Field Report, Fickle Friends

Recommended Songs I discovered this month:
    Field Report - "Blind Spot"
    Lucy Dacus - "Addictions"
    NoMBe - "Wait"
    pronoun - "run"
    Mt. Joy - "Astrovan"

    Favorite Albums of Q1
