Growing up and learning that Hook has such a negative reputation was such a strange experience. I loved it as a kid but I guess growing up with it is probably why I think about it fondly. Maybe if I had first seen it as an adult I'd feel different too?

It's an enjoyable enough big studio movie. Upon reflection, Spielburg seems to have tempered down some of the nerdy white guy saves the day elements that made the book a bit of an uncomfortable read. It's a fun movie driven by a likeable cast and great visuals, but it's ultimately nothing more than popcorn fodder.

 

One thing I liked about the book was how, of the main five "good" characters, only one of them was a white male. By the end of the story, the struggle against IOI was really a multicultural/multi-national one that really drove home the message that, ultimately, the age of connectivity we find ourselves in can be a good thing provided we recognize that the true enemies are not each other, but the faceless megacorporations trying to commodify and profit off of things like the internet that should be used as tools of liberation, not enslavement. Not the most original message (just like the book's messages of body positivity, the power of friendship, lite environmentalism, etc. aren't the most original messages either) but still cool to see in something written mostly as pop entertainment.

I've actually been kind of worried that the movie will downplay this element because, by virtue of being just a 2 hour and 20 minute film, it will necessarily focus more on developing Wade as the protagonist over the other characters. Hopefully that isn't the case.

I have MoviePass but I think I'm gonna see this tonight in IMAX just because I feel like it will be awesome on the huge IMAX screen.

 

Oddly there's only a couple digital-only (my preference) showings this weekend at my theater. So in terms of picking a convenient time, looks like I'm gonna have to do 3D (which I usually avoid)

 

Or maybe I'll see this IMAX 3D? I can't decide!

 

but most of those other characters are pretty offensive stereotypes, not to mention the transphobic "youre not really a woman" thing, Art3mis being little more than something for the main character to work towards, and honestly the white dude is the one that gets to be the hero at the end of the day. lets not sit here a pretend the book has some sort of super postitive message.

quite a few reviews have noted how the movie differs from the book in quite a few ways so maybe thatll make the movie a fun little popcorn flick

 

Seeing this tonight

 

I'm not excusing the book's problems or saying they don't matter. Cline isn't a strong writer, which is obvious, and he definitely wrote passages of the book in ways that come across totally tone-deaf and problematic. Should he have written Wade as someone who isn't knowledgeable enough to realize how that "Are you a woman? And by that I mean are you a human female who has never had a sex-change operation?" question comes across? Absolutely not. Even though it looks like he intended Wade to come across as an emotionally-stunted idiot teenager in that moment, it's still a bad look. And using Wade as the first-person narrator creates male gaze issues that are very difficult to overcome when the subject turns to characterizing Art3mis; it's impossible to separate Wade's infatuation with her from how strong of a character she actually is because we only hear about her through what Wade knows about her. There are tons of problems with the way the book was written, but there are good things about it in terms of its themes and overall "big ideas." Almost like George Lucas, in a way.

In the end, it does appear, at least to me, as though his heart was in the right place in a lot of ways. The book does have a positive message, several of them, they're just kind of not conveyed well/buried under the weight of the other problems because, again, Cline isn't the strongest writer. I just liked that particular aspect of the book from my comment, personally.

He Who Shall Not Be Named definitely identifies with WW wholeheartedly and without reservation, I think we can agree on that much

 

Was pumped for tonight so I made this for fun. Ignore the numbers because I couldn't get the thing to make them the right way but the seeding is generally right. I had to put RPO in there to fill the 32.

 

I saw that quick shot of the RX-78 in the new spot and had swell of pride, they made Gundam move so beautifully!

 

Not sure when or if I’ll see this movie, but I had to take this from work cause I can’t pass up anything with The Iron Giant on it tbh

 

Pretty fun. Better than I expected from the trailer but still pretty shallow.

 

This movie was aimed right at me and it hit the fucking mark. I loved it

 

Uggghh this movie was so close to being great. Unfortunately it ends up falling in the category of just "enjoyable". Which is fine. Like. I think it's an 7.5/10 kinda movie..but it had potential to be more.

 

Movie was fun. I highly enjoyed it overall.

Kind of lame that the majority of the bigger shots with tons of characters are darker and kind of impossible to see who is actually all on screen. If you’re gonna throw in all these characters give some good shots with them. There are some, but many times you see a crowd and have no idea who was actually on screen because it’s dark or cuts away quickly.

 

Yup. Visually there’s tons of wasted opportunity. The Shining part was amazing ; imagine if the rest was as accurate as that

 

Lots of blobs of characters, weak.

Yea! I don’t know which experience is better, seeing this movie and having seen The Shining already or having not seen it.

 

Never read the book and only really saw one trailer for this and I loved this movie, so many little things just made me smile throughout.

But what the fuck was up with Ben Mendelsohn's teeth?!
