It doesn't need to be the new Devil and God, that's it's own album. This is just what it is.

 

it's a pretty good record but wow

 

I just think people are always looking for that new breakthrough record that blows everyone away, and I think this is gonna be it.

 

They already did that with Home though and there's been a ton of those since D&G. Just feels weird to randomly compare it to that album.

 

i don't even like this record as much as home so it's hard for me to consider it the new anything

it did grow on me a lot over the past three months though

 

I haven't listened to The Devil and God in a few years, but I don't recall it sounding anything like this.

 

obviously guys INGO is their YFW, home is their deja, and this is their devil and god!
can't wait for their daisy!

i don't necessarily agree with it, just clarifying

 

I hate that analogy just because of how much I love Home and don't like Deja. Same for INGO and YFW really.

 

I think lyrically the new album is better than home but musically not. Does that make sense?

 

when i first heard the first half of "goodness pt. 2" where it's just drums and guitar flourishes i was weirdly reminded of the cure

Yeah, as much as I am really enjoying this album, it's just an odd comparison to make. Brand New are a huge band, and I don't see The Hotelier ever being as mainstream. And that's fine. Doesn't make one band better than the other.

 

Yeah I think it is just really good lyrically and had a huge impact on me emotionally. A lot of people have been making comparisons between The Hotelier and Brand New, and it just feels like Goodness fits that comparison.

Please don't crucify me.

 

I've just gone through with the lyrics and I'm not even sure I get what a lot of the songs are about, haha. I doubt this will ever match Home for me lyrically but hopefully after I spend some time with them they'll impress me more. Some of them really worked for me like "Soft Animal" or "Opening Mail".

 

but why are brand new a huge band? because of the critical acclaim and meaning to a wide amount of people
also rock music was bigger in the early 2000s

Yeah, that and how people have been drawing comparisons between the two in regards to their career/progression.

 

I wish I could warrant driving out to DeKalb twice in a week to see them and The Dear Hunter. I might just drop the $65 on their Pitchfork day but I'm crossing my fingers for an after show.

 

The latter is tough to quantify because of how different the music scene is now compared to when Brand New became popular. I can't really gauge that.

 

I honestly didn't even see all the lyrics on both albums. I'm just judging based on everyone praise for the lyrics in this thread. It seems this record hits harder to people lyrically than home did. Musically I like the arrangement and lack of interludes on home better than goodness. It flows better front to back but that's just my personal taste.
