Maybe their confusing sounds they don't like with production.
I've heard plenty of people complain about production on stuff with synth because they don't like synth.

I thought that people complaining about the production was like a running joke in the thread? Do people actually not like it? What would you expect it to sound like

I'm sure they want it to sound blisteringly loud like TGG

TGG suffered from muddy mixing and production I think, a more delicate approach would have done more justice to the guitar parts and the vocals. Seriously, I think Sister Cities might be the first damn TWY album we get where the vocals don't sound like they were recorded from the other end of the hallway that leads to the vocals booth. NCTH really pushed that "crappy speakers cranked up to 11" aesthetic which makes otherwise decent songs really hard to listen to on record. It just hurts your head. Ofc I'm not saying anything groundbreaking, people have been saying this for a long time.

I've been listening through my car stereo, airpods, my home stereo vintage speakers, and nice headphones and I've been able to distinctly hear all or most of each instrument and dan's vocals very clearly. What about the production on these songs are you all considering bad?

I'm not super blown away with the singles released. We Look like lightning is my favorite song off of this so far, and I've only heard the vinyl rip.
Though I will say in Pyramids of Salt the second verse chord change at 2:03 and the vocal harmony on the beginning of the last chorus are great moments.

  10. Probably going to avoid any other single releases at this point. I’m fully sold based on that bridge/outro to Pyramids, and I’ve liked the other songs a lot as well.

With all my excitement for this book I was reminded of the A Year as A Ghost book they put out years ago. Did anyone pick that up? Was there/is there a PDF version of it available? I'd love to get my hands on a physical copy, but I doubt that will happen.

  12. I have it. I actually flipped through it the other day for the first time in years. The Suburbia recording stuff in it is really cool, especially the in-progress lyrics and stuff like that. Lots of JJR in the tour sections though.
I’d ask in the TWY collective FB group if anyone is willing to sell it. I’ve never seen one for sale that I can specifically remember, but I’m sure it would be easier to find than Paper Boats.

That's a good idea. I'll try that. I actually have a PDF copy of Paper Boats. Would be cool to have the real thing, but at least I got to read it.

  14. I didn't like The Wonder Years until The Greatest Generation came out. That album totally clicked with me. But I didn't like the one that came after it, and so I'm hesitant about this new one. I haven't heard any of the singles yet though. Waiting til the full thing can be consumed.

Pyramids of Salt may be their best song since Suburbia.

granted I only like 2 songs since then, but still!!!

Been 100% in on everything since The Upsides, with Suburbia being my favourite, but these last two haven't clicked with me. Hoping I just need some time with them...

  17. Pop up shop info: The Wonder Years / Sister Cities

Guess multiple friends are getting this CD as gifts from me because between this, the tour VIP, and my own preorder I think I’ll have five copies.

Confused though.. like do I have to pre-order this from Reckless? Do I have to actually go to the store? Their website doesn't have a pre-order up for it or anything

  19. Seems like it needs to be in the store (and probably only the Wicker Park location?) I might stop by on my way home today or just call later and ask. No idea how fast these will sell out, and I definitely don’t want to wait until the day of.

Ugh I wasn't going into the city until Friday. I feel like with only 100 tix they'll be gone by then, now I don't know if I should try to come in today.

  21. Based on replies to their tweet Reckless doesn’t seem to have it organized yet.

  23. Yeah, even just explicitly saying the purchase has to be the day of, whether it’s at Reckless or the pop up, would alleviate all the confusion.
