I am making peace with the Bills/Allen rumors. I don't like it but there's nothing I can do about it. So I'm just going to shut up and try to enjoy the ride as they actually swing for a franchise QB for the first time since I really started watching /understanding football

 

Tyrod is good enough to be the starter and stick to? They shouldn't fuck up now is the point.

I see huge similarities in footwork. Neither of them take the pocket or dropbacks seriously at all. They might as well be playing soccer. And its understandable for a college player, they're like "why should I be a sitting duck when I'm way faster than these dudes?" But the problem is they both prioritize dodging guys over getting rid of the ball, because in college it works and the coverage falls apart and receivers are suddenly wide open.

Id be surprised if Mayfield breaks that habit before he enters the league. Hes gonna be a ball hog who thinks hes faster than he is. And hes gonna get in trouble because if you never train yourself to get rid of the ball quickly in college, you end up doing dumb shit and not thinking ahead when you try to get rid of the ball in the NFL.

Part of this is also, Oklahoma's passing scheme is all about isolated half field reads. Anything to the opposite side of the field is just a misdirection. A lot of NFL QB played like that in college so this isn t a deal breaker, but its another knock on him. Wasn't asked to throw with much anticipation, and a lot of his success holding the ball came from that.

He could drop his eyes from his receivers and still look back up and throw knowing the coverage was bunched on one side of the field. A lot of times he'd play action and then only have one or two weak-side defenders to dodge, so he had all day to wait for a WR in a "flood" playcall to cut across the empty middle of the field. I could go paragraphs giving you examples but in a nutshell the simplified offense validated a lot of bad habits that will lead to sacks and INTs in the NFL.

He also is a smallish dude who thinks hes invincible so theres that. I'm not talking about trash talk, I'm talking about how he tries to run like Cam Newton. That shit is dumb as fuck and hes gonna die if he doesnt tone that down.

Also often saw him wait till after a dude is open, then throw it with no sense of urgency, then the CB almost caught up but didnt because the throw was accurate and its college. Im thinking that CB catches up / reacts more often in the pros. This is why anticipation matters - if a guy is wide open its already too late and you better throw a bullet. His arm isnt strong enough to throw last minute and beat NFL CB with velocity.

Having said all this... I think if he played in a scheme like Russell Wilson plays in, that would be extremely favorable to his development. That scheme isolates receivers with unusual space creating, curved routes and angles. It avoids tight window, timing throws while putting more pressure on throws to be accurate over long distances, which is Mayfield's best attribute. Theres also tons of misdirection and QB motion so hed be comfortable with the more freeform structure of the pocket. However hes not nearly as fast as Wilson so doubt still remains that he could pull that type of game off at the pro level.

 

Mayfield would be very good in Cleveland and the scheme he played in his college is literally so good people are still overpaying Sam Bradford lol. Not comparable to Manziel.

 

Wouldn't that also be a knock though?
