I wonder why this "child molester" is running around free making music? Hmmm it must be the special power in the hair dyes he uses.

yeah he did the album with St. Vincent and a lot of performers at Contemporary Color were female, not even getting into Tina Weymouth

I don't know if this should go here but I think it might fit into the discussions we have in this thread. Has anyone else had run its with otherwise progressive/woke people defending crowdkilling at HxC shows the same way racists defend the confederate flag? Blows my mind that these people can talk about how important safe spaces are and then turn around and crowd kill.

people will go to the ends of the earth to defend shitty crowd behaviors. they act like if you ask them not to actively hurt people you want them to just stand still. you can move around and dance and even safely mosh without literally trying to harm people

I fully agree crowd killers piss me off and totally kill the efforts of heavier music to be more inclusive, because they tend to be more dangerous for women as well as LGBTQ and POC who could easily be targeted due to prejudice in places where wanton violence is validated and not questioned.

Has this gotten traction in the US? I don't think I saw a Chorus post about it, but this gets covered in every single Canadian paper/news site several times a week over the last month. Hedley is probably the biggest band in Canada, but I have no clue if people care about them in the states.

Very strange rollout of the apology process- they blamed it on "rockstar behaviour", decided to not cancel their tour, instead banning press at every show. They tried to power through it, but all of their sponsors/team dropped them so quickly.

he's not wrong? it's still people who consider themselves allies but aren't caring about crowd safety

I mean, I literally got told that
"it's just the way it is."
" you're not part of the scene so shut up."
"it's just an inseparable part of hardcore."
All of which sounds eerily familiar.

Edit: The best is "Yeah, I believe in safe spaces and shows should be accessible for everyone. But if you don't want to get hit don't come."

As if they can't connect the dots as to why telling people not to come if they don't want to be subjected to violence is making that space inaccessible.
" I'm not racist. The flag represents southern heritage."

I just really think that disrespect for your surroundings at a concert isn't something that should be equated to white supremacy.

Crowdkilling isn't simply a disrespect for your surroundings. It's the explicit targeting of people not in the pit. That targeting takes place for a number of reasons, racism being one of them. It's assault.

And just as there are people who will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to tell you why the confederate flag isn't racist to protect thier insular communities from being criticized, there are people who will do the same mental gymnastics to justify abuse in thier insular community.

Idk if this belongs here, or if it's been discussed before but...

I'm shocked at how quickly the Jesse Lacey thing blew over.

Like geez, I know not everyone is tuned in to the Twitter he-said, she-said drama, and are just there for the music, and that's fine but holy shit.

I still see people wearing Brand New shirts and hearing them on venue PAs all the time and it always takes me aback.

Like, fans always tend to either ignore or brush those types of things under the rug with a lot of bands (I didn't even know about Moose Blood until a few days ago) but I kinda thought the BN thing was a career-ending, devastating, shocking thing that completely flipped their fanbase on it's head (like Ian Watkins, which is probably a shitty comparison but still)

I honestly don't care about which bands you chose to support, but it still always confuses me that BN are still such a cultural epicenter for the emo communuty.

Brand new made great music, and heavily influenced mine and others interest in music, and many of their followers don't pay much attention to what's going on outside of their releases. That said, their frontman abused his power in a disgusting way, and his bandmates have ignored and thus fueled that behavior, and I'm still shocked that none of them came out to stop the victim blaming. They used to be my easy answer to the "favorite band" question, and now I often explain the situation in full when asked and try to inform them before anyone recommends them.

I still listen to their albums myself, as I've attached my own memories and meanings to their songs, but refuse to ever support them finacially again, especially as a victim of sexual assault myself. It's a difficult line to draw though, especially when it's an artist I've been so emotionally invested in. I'm curious as to how others see what the proper path is in a situation like this

    Things have changed.

The Brand New thing was, for all intents and purposes, career ending. We'll probably never hear from them again.
