I think some amount of owners came together collectively and decided to attempt to depress the FA market by delaying offers or offering low ball contracts, possibly specifically to Boras clients, yes. They've done it before and were punished under the CBA. I don't see any other reason for the FA market we've seen. Even if they're simply making good business decisions there's no explanation of why seemingly every team decided to stop making the bad business decisions they've made over the last 6 or 8 years at the same time.

It's dumb when people try to act like signing player to a way lower deal out of nowhere isn't some kind of collusion. "Oh yea, we just happened to not want to pay a really good player what he deserves" - said every team out there

See I think it's crazy that people think the owners came together and came with a scheme to not sign players. Like, there were players that got signed to good to decent contracts this year. Jd and yu did make bank. I think this is something that just naturally happened over time where owners agreed that signing 30yos to big contracts just wasnt worth it anymore.

And it happened in a year where it seems like a boat load of teams are all rebuilding at once.

There are many factors to complain about but the owners all coming into a room and all agreeing eith eachother not to spend is ludicrous

 

Why do you feel like the owners are noble, genuine people that you could ever trust and not a bunch of wealthy dudes who make tons of money and would love to find ways to make even more even if it's over being competitive or fair? As much as I despise Steinbrenner, it's becoming more clear that it is not that way anymore.

Also, you literally just said it "all the teams agreed not to sign 30yo to big contracts anymore". You think they all did that in an isolated incident without talking to any other teams?

It's not like being 30 is even a bad thing, you could still get big short term deals without it being 8yrs or whatever.

Nope, never said that. You asked if they were offered more elsewhere, I said the Angels claimed they did but it was refuted. That's it.

 

I just find it odd most fans make fun of teams when they give older players big multi-year deals but now that teams are more hesitant to do so fans claim some kind of conspiracy.

 

So what do you think they agreed upon. Don't spend more than x amount of dollars on free agents this year?

Also do you think the Harper's and machados of the world aren't gonna get ridiculous contracts too?

 

Why is it ridiculous for the owners to do that? If you read that article that's *literally* what they did in the late 80s. They were punished for it. It's a fact. It's not ridiculous at all.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Angels also denied that offer was given. It was reported yesterday that he got 0 other offers. Yu and JD made bank, but at least slightly less than was expected. A couple outliers doesn't account for the entire rest of the data set

Does it make sense for teams not to want to give out David Price style contracts anymore? Yes. Does it make sense that they all happened to individually decide that this was the year they were going to across the board stop doing that? No.

I feel like alot of these players played the market, lost, and are now just having to settle on what's offered if they want to play another year.

As large and ridiculous as the contracts had been handed out the past several years, the market had to correct at some point, this just happened to be the year that everything came to ahead at once.

 

That's reasonable, it shouldn't be that drastic a drop off though. Going from nothing to everything should have an in between. The problem is the center isn't real, if owners could get everyone for drastically cheaper they definitely would and wouldn't think twice. They think they're doing enough by paying them at all. If you're a C level free agent you're gonna get less than ever and that sucks, you shouldn't get hella overpaid but you should still make a respectable living to those above you. The difference between the big name players and the C level guys is gonna be as large as ever if this continues and it doesn't need to and shouldn't be.

In a perfect world it all evens out and no one is exploited, the players make a lot and the owners make a lot but that won't happen if this thing continues. Hopefully it doesn't but I'm not hopeful.

 

The 3B market was very thin this year. The premier 3B on the market didn't get any offers at all till Spring and the best of those 2 offers, which no one is sure existed in the first place, barely scratched half his predicted total? Doesn't pass the sniff test

 

I've agreed with Boras on a lot of things he's said this offseason so I'm not as much on the "fuck Boras" train now, but I really don't buy that there weren't at least discussions about that contract with the Angels. Cozart was their first choice, 3 years older and moving to 3b? Makes total sense to at least try to get Moustakas at 3 for 45 before settling on Cozart.
