The debut is probably a top 10 all time for me and West Side Story is one of the most impactful songs I've ever heard. Hope it sticks with you more this time around.

 

If I have to pick one song as their best, I'd say Keep Growing. Lost, Done, Jet Fuel, Opener, Face of God all way up there.

 

Keep Growing then Stove Lighter and maybe Face of God meow

 

Yeah there’s nothing on the new album that even touches West Side Story for me. The album seems to be missing that big moment for me.

 

I think The Opener is the big moment on here (to a different effect obviously) but it’s position as the uhhh opener makes it play differently.

 

I think this albums a big step up from the last one

 

Anna is going to be great for summer evenings. Also it reminds me of my friend Anna.

Actually I think the former applies to the whole album.

Gave it a quick listen at work yesterday, really digging it. Face of God is brilliant.

 

I'm curious what people think about this tweet? I wasn't going to post about it for fear of being labeled another man questioning this band/Georgia, but it's been gnawing away at me all day. I feel like the "it's not for you" part invalidates the experiences and trauma of many people, which rubs me the wrong way. I understand her intentions with the tweet, but it comes across poorly to me. Maybe I shouldn't be bothered because I'm not even sure I identify as a cis straight male, though I am sure that's how most people see an perceive me. (I am in a hetero relationship, but have spent countless hours grappling with my own identity/sexuality/gender, but I guess that's not for this thread). Idk, I just needed to get it out cause it's been bothering me and I can't ignore the voice inside my head rn.

 

Its in response to tone deaf reviews of their album, that missed the actual content and message behind these songs, I don't see a problem

 

Well I was bothered by it and was looking to start a discussion. Clearly she generalizes beyond just the reviewers. Appreciate having my view point dismissed though.

 

I get where you're coming from, but I think the intention is not saying that people don't share similar experiences with similar outcomes, but rather that they do not experience them the same way or for the same reasons. The album addresses a lot of the viewpoint of someone who has been worn down by oppression and by epidemics that tend to more commonly target those who are not in a position of privilege. It addresses a world that is tilted against you, and having those who contribute to or benefit from that tilting continue to ask you to prove yourself or your experiences or your emotional labor (im not exactly sure im using that term right, forgive me if not), intentional or not, is hard. I hope that made sense, sometimes i struggle with making things clear, and I'm happy to discuss more about this!

 

If you look at what is on her feed before it seems to be what she's addressing. Not entirely sure though which reviews as I haven't read any

 

I think its very specifically a response to the out of touch reviewers, at least from what I can tell of their posts this week.

I agree I think it’s specifically targeted at reviewers, at least I hope it is. Imo the ‘this isn’t for you’ attitude if being targeted at people other than critics isn’t helpful - ideally you’d want ‘cis white men’ to sit down and hear this record and hopefully gain an understanding from it of what marginalized people are struggling through, thus leading to empathy and change.

 

This is the part that bothers me. It’s fine that they want certain people to write about their work, but saying it’s not for you is like shutting people away either from learning from the record or finding solace in it

 

I personally don’t think shutting people out of things is ever going to be the way to affect positive change. I get the pain and frustration that has led to it, but yeah my view is it’s not the best way to move forward. But I really do think the comment was targeted at critics from a ‘cis white men should just shut up and listen for once’ perspective.

 

Maybe I’m just frustrated because I’ve been going through some shit and I was turning to this album as a release and now I feel like it’s not meant for me to find comfort in

 

I think it's more about not wanting white cis men to control the narrative of this album created by/for people who feel oppressed by patriarchy. Not about who can or should feel validation in the lyrics
