The 90th Academy Awards (March 4, 2018) TV Show • Page 22

  1. Thriller. Wouldn't call it "horror." Horror has a connotation, in my mind, this movie doesn't fit within. Peele calls it a "social thriller." That's what I'd go with.

I honestly think it's only going to reinforce the chances of it going to either The Shape of Water or Three Billboards. I imagine those two will be #1/#2 on a huge number of the Academy's ballots.

Yeah it's pretty clearly not a straight horror film. I actually forgot Peele called it that. I mean, I would think the writer/director/producer's classification would be the one we should all go with haha

I'd be surprised if it was anything but The Shape of Water.

  5. I won't be surprised at any of the movies winning with the way the ballots work. If you're nominated (and since we can't see the run down of # of votes) you've got a shot.

Even though I think Shape of Water will win, and my heart is with Phantom Thread, if CMBYN/Get Out/Lady Bird/Dunkirk won I'd be thrilled as well. It's one of those years where I'll be happy for my guesses to be wrong in a pretty sizable number of categories (like, all of the major ones).

It’s as much of a horror film as Rosemary’s Baby. It’s psychological/social horror. I don’t care about carrying this any further re: thriller vs horror, I just find it so odd that people push against labeling something that is critically acclaimed as horror. It happens a lot.

I mean the cool thing about it is that it has a bunch of different influences and elements in it from all different genres. It's different and it's a genre film and that's why I'm pulling for it.

In addition to it being great

It got posted twice because he highlights how dumb the genre argument is

It could have been one of his meanings, iirc he tweeted it right when the controversy about the classification at the Golden Globes happened

I thought he meant it in a more metaphorical sense, personally. Like having to do with the social commentary and themes of the film.

Keep in mind that The Tree of Life lost cinematography to Hugo, so this award must not actually award best cinematography.

Tons of people hate 3 billboards. I think the preferential ballot is a knife to the heart of that film, honestly.

what about three billboards and shape of water would draw anything remotely close to a similar crowd to be 1 and 2 on the same ballots

It's pretty obvious, actually. The Shape of Water is a Hollywood-obsessed romance film with a throwback feel, a big musical number in the middle of it, and is made by a respected filmmaker (all things old school Oscar voters love); the strangeness of its premise, something everyone thought would handicap it, seems to not matter in the slightest as it leads the pack with the most nominations this year. Three Billboards is both a talky acting showcase and a "message movie" (two other things old school Oscar voters love), despite most of us on here not buying into it. Fishman aside, they're both "safe" choices that also have the buzz and backing of guild/BAFTA wins behind them. Ergo, 1 & 2 on a lot of ballots.

Just because tons of people on the internet hate it doesn't mean older Oscar voters itching to vote for a "message movie" that doesn't center on African Americans do too.

an allegorical monster movie that's a glorified fable and a "look at america" british/irishman who read the new york times for six months and then wrote a screenplay about it.

If that's how you want to look at it, fine. You're not looking at it the right way, but that's your decision.
