This was a fun read, I have also never listened to a SP album but know all the singles that played non stop as I was growing up. I wonder if they would click for me either at this point on first listen.

Thanks for giving this a listen - I know it's quite a time commitment!

Is it as much of a commitment as me giving @Davjs both Starset albums?

Starset? I thought you said Starbomb. Oh well, better luck next time. Starbomb is awesome btw.

Timewise it's about the same - a touch over 2 hours.

Have you ever heard Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness?

  7. Idlewild is criminally underappreciated. The Remote Part is an all-timer.

I wish I could articulate on here how much I wanted to like it. I listened to it quite a bit because I really did not want to write something negative. At least the music was there.

Kevin said he has heard the record(s). He had only heard the singles from the record(s).

My partner this week is @Wall Of Arms

They recommended Bombay Bicycle Club- So Long, See You Tomorrow.

I had heard the band name prior to this, but I had never even heard a song by them(to my knowledge) The band was very good background music(no insult meant in that) I mean that in the sense that it has an atmospheric/electronic vibe to it that is very relaxing. There were a good amount of styles on the record, from pianos ballads("Eyes Off You") to dance numbers("Feel")

The music itself is very hard to compare to other bands. If I had to do a RIYL, I wouldn't even know where to start. They are(were) a very unique band, and I'm interested to hear their other records, because I have a feeling they're one of the those bands who have different sounds across each of their records.

Thanks for the rec @Wall Of Arms

Favorite songs: "Overdone" "Luna" "Eyes Off You" "So Long, See You Tomorrow"

Good write up and good job dealing with a double album

I don't know if I'd say MUCH better, but I can see how someone would prefer it. I think Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness is the best thing they've ever done, but really their entire 90s output is all killer.

Fuck You(An Ode To No One) is one of my all-time favorite SP songs

That's definitely in my top 5 on the album! X.Y.U. is probably my favorite on the album. I was lucky enough to see them play it live a few years back and it was awesome!

I've only seen them twice, but the first time I saw them it was at a pretty small venue (House of Blues in Cleveland) and they were promoting their Teargarden by Kaleidyscope stuff (ehhh) but the show was awesome and intimate.

    Here's what they played:
The Smashing Pumpkins Setlist at House of Blues, Cleveland

I remember the last song they played was Gossamer and they played about a 35 minute version of it. Oh, and Kill Hannah opened for them (that's a band I haven't listened to in a while!)

SP are my favourite band and Mellon Collie is a top 3 all timer for me (possibly even number 1). I have so many memories tied to that band, they were even my first ever gig. Sorry you didn’t gel with them @Michael Schmidt but well done for trying so hard to like them though, I can see how Billy’s voice can be a turn off for some.

(Whispers) I rank Siamese Dream 3rd in the SP discography cause I’m crazy

United States is another pretty solid SP songs and it’s great live. For whatever reason though Zeitgeist isn’t on Apple Music :/

Their bass and guitar tones are so good on the record. I was loving the ebbs and flows. I didn't mention it, but it was almost like I was getting listener's fatigue with the vocals and then certain melodies would hit me the wrong way. And it's not like I think it's bad, but just not my taste I guess. I will keep giving them a chance though haha.

You weren’t getting listeners fatigue from it being a double album? Haha!

That was definitely a part of it. The first time I did both sides in one sitting. After that I split it up so it was really like having two records instead of one long record. But going through the discs individually I would find myself getting tired of the vocals.
