Nate if you liked this but prefer more melody then definitely try Dead FM and Exist English by them, it's basically the same style of punk just with more hooks. Also just because you mentioned them in your review, it's made me put on boysetsfire all morning, bloody love that band.

The Weakerthans: Reconstruction Site (2003) Epitaph Records

The Weakerthans are an indie rock band out of Winnipeg, Manitoba. They formed in 1997 after front man John Samson left punk heavyweights Propaghandi to start a publishing company. Their sound can best be described as alt rock and folk, mixed with some slight punk influences. The best way to describe them is if Ben Gibbard fronted a folk band. This is the bands third studio album and is sort of a concept album. There are three "sonnets" that break the album up and set the story for a terminally ill patient that leads to their eventual death. It takes us through the phases someone would go through being diagnosed with something so earth shattering including grief, regret, loss and hope. There are a few other random topics peppered in but this is the overall theme of the record.

I really have no previous history with the band so I went in with no idea what to expect. This is an amazing record and sits perfectly with some of my favorite musical tastes. From my very first listen, I was instantly sold. I usually listen to an album at least 3 times before it really starts to make sense and if I am really going to enjoy it but this one was a rare exception.

My only complaint about the album is the length. It is a minor criticism but it does feel a bit longer than it really is for some reason. The wait is well worth it though because my two favorite tracks sit right before the final sonnet.

This is a short review, I am sorry but this record is incredible and I think a lot of people on this site would enjoy it quite a bit.

RIYL: Alt Rock, folk, indie rock

 

Nice rec @Kennedy ! Glad you enjoyed it @Nate_Johnson Make sure you check out Left & Leaving too! The title track is one of my all-time favorite songs on there!

 

Here are my first write ups. They probably won’t be very good haha. I am lucky in a sense that my wife decided our weekend should be painting and housework so I could get a few more listens of each in.


Half Moon Run - Dark Eyes



This was something I never would have listened to on my own but so glad I heard it. I was pretty much sold from the singers voice right off the bat. The first song Full Circle is a softer one with beautiful guitar and keyboard parts in-between the after the first chorus and bridge. Almost every song has huge tribal sounding like drums that never get old and add a lot to each song. She Wants to Know is probably my favorite on the album and it does pretty much everything the band is great at, blending keyboard and haunting guitar pieces with loud drums and melodic vocals.

The last track 21 Gun Salute is interesting because it’s the only song on the album that is all electronic, but it still worked and didn’t sound out of place.


Highlight Tracks: She Wants to Know, Fire Escape, Full Circle, Give Up


I will definitely be listening to this again.



City & Colour - if I Should Go Before You



What’s funny about this artist is that I am a huge fan of Alexisonfire but have never taken a chance to listen to Dallas Green’s solo project. I already knew his voice is amazing and there is no way this was going to be anything lower than good. The opening track Woman is a great slow build song. It blew my expectations out of the water because I expected a typical acoustic song format and not a song layered with synths, different guitars and drums. The last two tracks are probably my favorites. Friends has a such a fantastic musical piece at the last minute and half of the song that starts slow and builds up. I may not have liked this as much as Half Moon Run, but I will be re-listening to this as well.

So glad you really enjoyed the both of them. Half Moon Run's second album Sun Leads Me On is so good as well, they are working on a 3rd right now to. The way you imagined City & Colour sounding is pretty much his first album Sometimes, his solo sound expands quite a bit each release.

My favorite Sevendust album Animosity. I think since we listen to the same type of music that would fall into the genre called "buttrock" by some (Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace) Kevo might like SD.

Animosity is a amazing record and Angel's Son is such a powerful song. I have seen these guys more times than I can count and they never disappoint. Some of the nicest and hardest working guys.

Seen them a handful of times throughout the last decade and so good. Angel's Son still gets me and Xmas Day is a really well softie too.

 

I didn't realize people considered Sevendust buttrock! That makes me sad. They're extremely talented!

This record has my favorite Sevendust song on it. "Trust"

 

I discovered Sevendust when I got the VHS of Woodstock 1999 for Christmas haha

 

I hope people really don't call them buttrock. Even hardcore metal enthusiasts like them and consider them far above the buttrock label.

To be honest, I never got the term and disagree with Buttrock, I just figured anything that was "radio rock" was considered that, like these guys, Shinedown, BB, ect. I'm glad this band is getting some love on here

I stopped everything and put this record on. Insane how well it stands up.

 

Nickelback is butt rock. That's your frame of reference.
