Weezer - Weezer (The Black Album) (March 1, 2019) Album • Page 4

  1. Should've been in place of "Another album ranking," too lazy to fix it and there will definitely be more rankings before the album drops so it stays haha

Maladroit is the best Weezer album and everyone else is wrong

I was going to suggest a Weezer bracket and then I realised it would never end because Weezer would release a new album after every round

I'm hoping for a confessional lyric style on this album. One of the best things about ewbaite was that, for the first time since the 90s, Rivers was writing some songs from his own perspective--and those lyrics were 1000x more compelling. Back to the Shack may not have been the greatest song, but it's still so refreshing to listen to because it's not about some cliche character the way so many Weezer songs are. Really anticipating great things from this record.

"Ruling Me" and "Trainwrecks" still jams. Just confirmed.

Not singling you out specifically, but where are people getting the idea that this album is going to be like "back to roots/classic weezer?" He said the record is dark, but also has the most electronic and out-there elements the band has ever experimented with

Also mentioned sampling and stuff like that. For as excited as I am for this album, I think a lot of people are going to hate it if it’s what Rivers says it is (because they’ve built it up to be something else in their head)

I'll be honest - we have two confessional/emo/grungey/loud rock music records from Weezer. I don't need a repeat of Pinkerton and Blue, because I have Pinkerton and Blue. What I love about Weezer is the weird experimentation and the fact that every album sounds different, while sticking to the nerdy/awkward/detached from the mainstream/outsider perspective that Weezer always has had. If they have never evolved and changed, I wouldn't be interested in a 12th album from them at all.

Also, maybe I'm being too simplistic, but Rivers is happy. He's happily married, has found spiritual peace, and is wealthy beyond anything he dreamed of growing up. For him to sing sad songs, he has to put himself in someone else's shoes (like much of Pacific Daydream), or think about how he used to feel, because he's a really happy guy. I'm not sure reading his diary is all that interesting at this point.

I'm hoping the Black album is like nothing we've heard before from these guys, which - if their track record is any indication - is what they're planning.

I'm not calling back for a rock/grunge record or anything. I'm all for Weezer experimenting with their sound. But Rivers is an interesting guy. Consequently, when I hear a song that's written from his perspective, it's really great and I get a lot out of it. However, when Rivers writes from the perspective of a character, he tends to invoke a lot of shallow cliches that may be relatable, but are missing the depth he is 100% capable of achieving.

When you find common ground with an artist on a deeper, more personal level, it's magical (as lame as that sounds). And it's a real treat when you get to experience that connection on a Weezer track.

The whole “character” thing is likely only to a certain extent. I personally find a lot of Rivers’ personality and emotion in every song, just sometimes sung through various perspectives
