I honestly have no issues with the third act of The Ritual. I honestly thought it was all going to be some huge twist where it wasn’t really happening or something. Hutch kinda seemed too determined to go through the forest at first which seemed weird. I thought maybe he had some type of weird motive. That or I thought it wasn’t really going to be a monster aka The Village. I’m glad it was all really happening like it seemed. Plus the immortal people were super creepy, and the design for the Norse god was really good. @Vivatoto in the book that part where he burns the corpses that appear to be still alive. Are those explained at all? I assumed that’s the original worshipers of the god, and that’s how they eventually end up. Still alive through unnatural means, but corpses essentially. Which is again really creepy, and interesting.

  3. The Ritual was cool. Also watched that Haunters documentary. It's insane the lengths people go to with these extreme haunted houses. I don't think I could ever do 'em.

Literally the entire book I remember being super worried it was going to be a Village-esque twist, haha. The book leans into that possibility a little bit more. If you're curious what the big difference between the book and the movie is I'll say the identity of the worshippers is way different, I'm going to quote Cory after this post talking about them so if you want to know check out those spoilers. It's been awhile since I've read the book but I believe you are totally right about the corpses.

It's been a long ass time since I've read it so I'm having trouble remembering specifics. The one I was referring to is your second spoiler... I actually loved what Nevill did with the metal band. I've always found that sort of shit interesting, the black metal bands that go as far as to believe in this stuff (although I guess in this situation jokes on us). For one thing Blood Frenzy is mentioned in nearly every single one of his books and a really fun connecting tissue in his world, so just for that importance I would have liked to have seen them. I definitely agree with you it's more logical, and I'd also add more generic, and that's exactly why I love Nevill so much is he does make those completely original, almost quirky incidents. I definitely think it could have worked, they'd have to add maybe 15 minutes for some real character development with the band and it would turn people off, but overall I think it would have worked.

I definitely see your point as far as it being a more generic turn. That is cool about the Blood Frenzy connections. What book of his would you recommend checking out next?

  10. Creep 2 was great. Pretty sure I liked it more than the first, but I've forgotten a lot about that one.

Hellraiser Judgement dropped today. I’ll be watching tonight as soon as it’s dark out. I can’t wait. Doesn’t matter how shitty the last films were, I still get excited every time there’s a new one.

Last Days is his masterpiece, one of my favorite books of all time. It's about guerilla documentary film making, so it's pretty much set up perfect for a movie adaptation. Honestly though I would recommend reading his books in order, they're all fucking great and they build off of the mythos of each other. Last Days and Apartment 16 are probably the most important besides The Ritual to get it all. My other favorite of his is No One Gets Out Alive which turns a typical haunted house story on its ass. Lost Girl is the only book that doesn't fit into his world and it's more of an thriller/action/revenge story, great but not where you want to go if you want horror. He also just released two separate short story collections if you're into that. I believe you can get a few of the stories for free on Amazon.

  19. The Nun is moving from July 13th to Sept 7th. New Line figures it'll do better with that date.

I’ve loved the franchise. Pinhead has always been my favorite horror icon. I grew up watching his stuff before I ever started thinking critically about movies. Nostalgia places a factor, but I’ll always contend the first two are great horror films. The rest I can’t argue the same, but I still love (most of) them.

Well, Judgment had its high points and its lows. Some pretty grotesque stuff on screen. Some new cenobites were pretty satisfying. Paul Taylor was a very serviceable Pinhead. I’d be satisfied seeing him continue on. Far better than the last guy. I’m sure the film will be generally disliked here. Pretty flimsy story telling. Plot was pretty weak. Budget constraints were evident. Typical Hellraiser sequel haha.

oh i think the first two are great (pinhead freaked me the hell out as a kid), but if we're going clive barker adaptations, my money is with candyman ha
