I say that because the word mainstream has really awful connotations in the metal community and people use it as a derogatory thing toward deafheaven

I would say for the most part we understand what you are saying and don't disagree. We are just saying it differently.

Starkweather have been around longer than most of us. It's nice to know they are still alive and kicking.

yep. this is their first new music in ~7 years which is awesome. i remember listening to this sheltering night when it first came out and not really being able to comprehend what the hell was going on because it was so out there. i probably should go back and give their earlier material a more in-depth listen.

Closest thing to black metal I consistently listen to is destroyer 666.

But my official stance is that black metal sucks and no one should listen to it. JUST SAYIN!

I mean we had to listen to three pages of Machine Head talk in here...

BTW, I'm coming down with a cold or something so I didn't go see Machine Head last night. Best decision I've made in a while.

Most of those three pages were people shitting on Machine Head's new album. I'm okay with that.

They were actually on a decent run from Blackening to Bloodstone(sp?) & Diamonds, IMO. The fact this new album is so laughably bad is a bit out of left field. Just listen to Triple Beam and form your own opinion, but Robb Flynn rapping is...not enjoyable.

I don’t frequent heavy music much anymore as I used to, but I’ve been really digging Employed To Serve’s newest album “The Warmth of a Dying Sun”. I’ll link it later. For fans of Converge and Code Orange or somewhere around in there. A few of the riffs remind me of some Sipknot guitar tones from Vol 3 or Iowa. Female fronted too. Albums keeps pulling me back in with how well it’s done.

Yes. That Employed to Serve record is good. I only got turned onto them because of Riley from Thrice's year end list.

The problem I have with a lot of the hate Machine Head are getting is that a lot of the people are just mad that Robb Flynn isn't some terrible alt-right/conservative person. I know that's not the case for the people here that don't like the new MH album, but that's definitely the case most other places online. I'm not a fan of this strange wave of people that are openly racist/sexist/xenophobic in metal. They act like metal has never been political, which just isn't true.

I appreciate the new Machine Head album for the message behind the lyrics, even if the lyrics are a bit clunky. Musically, I actually like it more than I liked the one before it, which I only ever listened to once. It does run a bit on the long side, but I honestly don't think that it's the big, embarrassing mess that some people are saying it is. I don't spend much time listening to MH, but I don't hate them at all. I'll never be embarrassed for being all fan of theirs.

That all being said and done, I'm more into black, death, and doom metal myself.

    I love all metal
I love all metal equally and honestly, ever since I’ve been involved with CMCS I’ve listened to it less and less and I don’t really miss it.

Favorite genres are Progressive Metal/Djent & Black Metal & Doom.

Death Metal is a dime a dozen these days but there are some good bands out there.

the only death band I ever really ended up loving is opeth but they haven't been straight death in a long time

  22. I loved djent bands like Periphery and TesseracT when that scene blew up, but those bands mostly progressed beyond that sound after their first albums, so idk if I actually like djent anymore ha. I liked Monuments and Vildhjarta back then, but they probably don't hold up as well anymore.

I just remembered this video, which always made me laugh.

I'm not going to speak to some of the more political reasons that Robb is getting ire from metalheads For reference and example, I'm supportive of his reasons for potentially not wanting to play Davidian anymore, and I haven't been a fan of a lot of the MRA/alt-right posturing that a lot of other meatheads have made in the wake of things like the Decapitated case. But that's all an aside.

I'm not a fan of Robb recently because he's whiny and can't take criticism well. His response to the Decibel review of Catharsis was completely asinine and childish. You have been a musician for 25 years at this point and should be able to handle a bad review. Whining about a bad review on social media is petulant and not a good look...rather than just being an article people may read once you're drawing the attention on yourself. Neill Jameson' s column on the matter expresses the sentiment well:

All in Your Head, Or Why Metal Musicians Shouldn’t Overreact to Negative Reviews | Decibel Magazine

Basically, it just boils down to you can't be thin skinned as an artist.

There was a huge burst of good djent in the latter half of the 2010's and a few years after that. Then every single up and coming band in the scene started to label themselves as "progressive metalcore" and implemented endless chugs and clean vocals. It got really old, really fast. I was super into Erra and Northlane and those bands are a far cry from what they used to be, Northlane in particular.

Speaking of straight up death, have you listened to Symbolic by Death? It’s more, uh, progressive?

Also what is it you don’t like about death metal? I ask because I hated it for a long time but have been coming around to it the past couple years
