Tosin is a guitar master - saw them live back in 2016 and it was fantastic. So much going on in each song. Can't wait to see what they produce in the future

Yea, I always have a hard time imagining how they could possibly produce more original and awesome material than they already have, and yet they did it with The Madness of Many. Can't wait to hear them do it again.

I caught them opening on the Thrice farewell tour back in 2012. My friend and I just stood slack-jawed watching Tosin play. I couldn't even wrap my head around what he was doing.

Oh yeah, Contortionist stops here (Minneapolis) in a couple weeks; might check it out.

Tosin and Javier are talented guitarists. That's about all I got with regards to AAL.

pretty much this. band does absolutely nothing for me and listening to their music is like counting cracks in the ceiling but they're skilled I guess.

Maybe bands like Periphery better suit your fancy?

Misha is also a talented guitarist, but Periphery hasn't done anything for me since their debut though. I've never been a huge fan of Spencer's vox.

Spencer's vocals are gross. Also nice goddamn avatar.

I don't listen to Periphery myself, mainly because of the vocals. But apparently they were pioneers of the "djent" thing.

Most djent/instrumental/show-off guitar shit kinda bores me after a few minutes.

AAL, Periphery, Tessearct, etc... They're all solid/talented musicians, but I can't really get into much of their stuff.

I'm the same way. To me much of that stuff sounds the same. But AAL is different in my opinion, they're not just chugging on the top string.

gracias. the carrots weren't doing it for me, and i was looking at one of my bolt thrower shirts last night thinking that'd make a nice avatar. so i threw it up on one of my rare evening posting binges last night.

pretty much this for me at this point in my life. i actually don't mind a lot of wankery/technicality in my metal, but the chugga chugga riffing of djent doesn't really do anything for me. the closest i get to it at this point is either astronoid (which is more black metal/prog than djent in structure) or old meshuggah.

Meshuggah has a few legit jams, and they're obviously talented, and maybe it's just my ignorance, but I feel like a lot of their stuff kinda sounds the same after a while.

that's why a lot of the later era meshuggah stuff (bascially catch 33 on for me) just bores me. it just sounds like a cacophony of differing rhythms, riffs, and drum beats that blends together after a while...kinda like dropping a bunch of pots and pans down the stairs repeatedly.

been jamming khemmis a lot lately. hunted is a gamechanger.

Yeah, I never got super into Meshuggah, but Rational Gaze always gets me hype.

My buddy turned me on to Khemmis and it’s the most excited I’ve gotten about a metal band in a long time. They’re like the encapsulation or what I love in the genre.

Oh fuck yeah! I'm all about this. My favorite venue in Dallas, plus Obituary, Pallbearer and Skeletonwitch is an amazing line up. Need to check out Dust Bolt.

if anyone has black metal recs for a newbie, I'd appreciate it very much

would prefer a wide range of stuff slash your personal favorites slash stuff that is harder to come across rather than just "accessible" stuff.

from cursory listening I think I enjoy atmospheric elements, progressive elements, and extreme dynamics, but am open to having my tastes ~ expanded ~
