“More likely” does not mean in all cases.

this conversation is unimportant since honestly our opinions do not matter here

If our opinions dont matter then whats the goal of an accountability thread? Just so we can parade a bunch of shitty people and give ourselves a pat on the back? If this thread isn't the place for discussing how to more appropriately engage with these situations then I don't know what we're doing?

    Yes.

    No.

I use this thread so I know who’s shitty cause I don’t wanna support that. I don’t entirely agree that opinions are useless here, I think it can be helpful to reach a consensus on what is or isn’t irredeemable behavior, but when it comes to like...the length of an apology? Absolutely useless discussion.

That statement started out quite well but by the last paragraph I had basically lost all hope.

Shame. At least I never listened to the band.

Yup. Exactly. A waste of time and space for a bunch of men not involved with the situation to be having. There are far more productive discussions we could be having instead of using that dumb one to dominate the conversation especially when we are all on the same side here

That's the majority of what I've read in here.

Out of curiosity, what does RAINN do on a pragmatic level? When people donate there, what happens with the funds? It's not clear from their website aside from "programs and services".

Their website is pretty comprehensive- victims' services (so, therapy, medical treatment, etc), research, consultation, legislative initiatives, education. As they are a non-profit, all of their finances are public record. You can read their year-end impact report here.

edit: they also keep up most of the nation's sexual assault hotlines and are working on a DNA initiative to help solve unsolved cases.

Of course! RAINN is one of those organizations that's so big, you almost don't realize how they're working behind the scenes of almost everything that has to do with the rape crisis in our country. I didn't even know until right now that they consult with television shows.

And yeah...it's a sorry state of affairs. I think as we work as public perception changes and forces police to take these cases seriously, we can start to get to work on bringing justice to victims.

The news article(s) coming out last year regarding this have changed my thinking in ways I can't even properly describe yet. It's so upsetting, and I've tried to bring it up to friends whenever I can when we discuss this topic. I hope they throw out some of their outdated opinions as quickly as I did. A lot of us just didn't/don't know what an unfair battle it is to try to get justice through the "proper channels".

From a dude's perspective... a rape kit is pretty invasive, and would logically only ever be submitted to by someone who was THAT serious about their accusation...

HOW ARE YOU NOT TESTING THAT SHIT AND WHY

  13. cwhit

    still emperor emo Prestigious

because it costs money and government thinks they have better things to do than protect women

if people don't think there are systematic procedures against women i don't know what to say. this right here is proof

Point acknowledged, but of course it costs money - why perform an invasive test in the first place if the follow-up systems are virtually non-existent? Where's the broken link in that chain?

  15. cwhit

    still emperor emo Prestigious

how else do you supply "proof" of sexual assault to the broken law system that is our country? just truly disgusting that this isn't a priority in law enforcement, and that's why groups like RAINN are fighting the good fight

I wrote a paper in college about the backlog of untested rape kits and people were shocked at how many go untested and did not want to believe it. It's heartbreaking

cross posting what I said in the TWIABP thread but that second to last paragraph is what more abusive people need to realize. glad she finally understands the nature of her actions

Yeah I think it was shaky in the middle but it ended and started strong and I think it not being perfect is okay when she's acknowledging that it's a process. It doesn't read to me like there's ulterior motives, just trying to be open and honest. But I'm interested in what others think
