@Kennedy and I traded albums and he recommended:
Typhoon: Offerings (2018) Roll Call Records

Typhoon are an indie rock band out of Oregon that create music can best be compared to Arcade Fire or Bright Eyes. At any one time, the band can employ up to 12 members that combine horns, percussion and strings.

Offerings is the fourth full length from the band led by front man Kyle Morton. His vocals alternate between that of Conor Oberst and Scott Anderson of Finger Eleven fame. Kyle's vocals are accompanied by a female throughout a handful of songs on the record, (I am sorry but I don't have the album notes in front of me to give credit to whomever the female vocals belong to) and they work perfectly together.

The album as a whole, is a concept record with the idea of an unnamed man losing his memory and identity. The album is divided into four parts: 1)Floodplains, 2)Flood, 3)Reckoning and 4)Afterparty and each segment has the protagonist experiencing a stressor and how he chooses to go through it. This is where I lose the band as I can't connect to it lyrically. It is a whopping 70 minutes long and this is fine but the content comes from numerous literary references and screams of pretentiousness. One review I read of the album, said that there were over 2300 words throughout all of the songs. With that being said, I did enjoy some of the constant references throughout the album. Asa nisi masa is a phrase constantly repeated that I learned that it is a nonsensical mnemonic device borrowed from Federico Fellini’s 1963 film 8 1/2. Other references include the river Lethe, Socrates, and religious texts. The depth of which will require multiple listens with lyric sheets in hand in order to unravel its winding and layered story.

Musically, the album goes with sort of minimalist ambient noise sound even though they are far from this and the songs are extremely complicated. As I mentioned before, they remind me of Arcade Fire but a toned down version. The songs seem to build but never really go anywhere. The best way to describe it is a like a wave that gets bigger and bigger but never breaks and at the end of day you are left with the friendly wave in Moana.

We are reminded to give albums time to grow on us like a fine bottle of wine by revisiting them, listening to them a few times and keeping an open mind. Maybe this album is just that for me right now and that I need to give it more time and revisit it in the future to see how I truly feel about it. (At the time of this writing, I have listened to it 5 times) But at this point in time I can't really justify giving a great score.

Shame you didn’t enjoy it more! But honesty is the best policy Nate. You’ve done the right thing. Maybe the only mistake you’ve made is the finger eleven RIYL ;)
