Hey guys, I'm starting to run pretty behind on this, work has been crazy since going back after the holidays but I have listened to my rec's from @nickyeatworld and @Kiana and I should get some write ups posted early next week. Also, @Kiana glad you seem to have dug both my rec's, surprised Rainer Maria isn't on Spotify though, it's on the UK version.

I’m just going to say that if you listened to All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us and Gravity and Gone With The Wind didn’t stand out to you, you probably didn’t listen and just skimmed a few tracks

Makes sense seeing how you also didn’t remember listening to Relationship of Command ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Glad you dug the Banner Pilot record, @BTDandFeelingThis! I knew it was bold to use the Blink comparison, but I’m glad you caught on to it. Skeleton Key and Northern Skyline are my favorites off that record. Their other records are good, but I would say listen to Heart Beats Pacific next if you decide to listen to more of their music.

    Author
    - IIFOIIC

It’s always a bold move releasing an album in January of a new year, but Minneapolis indie-rock trio Author decided to go one step further and release their new album IIFOIIC (Is It Far Or Is It Close) on New Year’s Day and with it, comes an exciting sound to awake the senses and clear the haze from the night...or year...before.

My personal interaction with the band’s catalogue has been fairly minimal, but those that I know are fans are incredibly passionate about the band. It’s something I couldn’t help thinking about when I went in for my first listen and I can see why their following is so devout - their sound is so clean, so well-produced and layered and so passionately delivered and for a genuine indie band, it’s so rewarding to hear.

IIFOIIC reminds me musically of a lot of the British indie bands of the 2000s/2010s, the buzzsaw bass sounds that exists throughout on the album is so reminiscent of Bombay Bicycle Club, particularly the track “Overdone” (go listen...please), the jangly guitars recall the summery vibes of Two Door Cinema Club or Declan McKenna and there’s a glossy pop-production that recalls more recent You Me At Six. It’s at this stage where the sound crosses over and the American influence becomes prominent - the production and vocals are full of such a sheen, which is admirable and impressive, but for my personal taste became a little too “clean” as the record went on. It was by no means enough to make me dislike the album and it became a real companion for me on my commutes, but it was factors such as this that made a lot of the album bleed together for me after a while and take away a few “points” for my internal ranking system.

Overall, I really appreciated such a fresh and vibrant album starting off my listening experience for the year, and a lot has to be said for that. The slog of a new year, even with releases and within the music industry can be palpable, but Author managed to revitalise my listening habits immediately. I hope it will stand out as the year goes on, time will tell, but right now it’s left a definite impression.

Recommended Tracks: “Want”, “Calm and Clear”

so the first thing i ought to do here is apologize to @Wall Of Arms for things taking so long. ive had a lot on my plate for the last month or so and i had hoped id be able to get these in earlier. im very sorry.

    crows - cold comfort ep
this was a nice one; i love a quick four-track ep, haha. i got some wolf alice vibes from this a little bit - the heavier moments on here reminded me a bit of when wolf alice gets heavier. its not an overwhelming or super in yr face type of heaviness, but it feels fuller and grungier. that said, my favorite song on here was actually the most restrained, ghost tape 10. i think it was a great display of the vocalist's voice and i thought they pulled off that style very well. i know theyve got an album coming out this year, so ill have to be on the lookout for that

dear and the headlights - small steps heavy hooves
this was a band i was somewhat familiar with; im pretty sure i have a copy of drunk like bible times lying around my room (which ive never listened to) somewhere and i recognized sweet talk pretty immediately (from where i cant remember, tho). i love the singers voice and i really like how prominent the acoustic guitars are all over the album. it reminds me, a little bit, of how the formats interventions + lullabies would sound if they'd gone full-blown occasionally. that is a compliment of the highest order. guess ill need to dust off that copy of drunk when i go home
