The conversation about this movie is so interesting. It's clearly bad right? I agree with whoever said it earlier in this thread that it was written by a robot.

How can any of the "drama" hit in this movie if none of the characters act realistically?

Nevermind. It was nominated for Best Picture so I obviously saw a different movie.

I was anticipating and saw it before any "backlash" and I was severely disappointed leaving the theater. Heavily flawed/clumsy and, simply, not better than any of the other nominations.

Now I didn't and don't loathe it as much as some, but I will get there if it starts taking awards away from more deserving films and performances, haha.

I'm trying to read the Wesley Morris article from this week, but the NYT site won't let me read for free. Is it posted anywhere else? I've caught a few bits on Twitter only.

Thanks for posting this. Listening to the podcast now and there are lots of interesting things mentioned on both points of view on this film.

I just remembered the “I hope I get raped part”

  8. Aregala

    Blistering Guitar Lead

followed by "I hope you get raped too!"

and a wistful shot of McDormand thinking about the loss of her daughter with a SWELLING score

It's insane. I was so shook when that happened. I was never on board with the film, but I think that was the real tipping point.

I'm baffled that so many people think this is legitimately great

haven't been this baffled by the praise of a turd since Birdman

Birdman, Lala Land and Hacksaw Ridge are all masterpieces compared to this IMO.

you guys are getting into my head here because anytime i talk to someone about this movie outside the thread the comments range from "i loved it" to "it was okay". chorus is the only place i hear this immense rage.

I remember seeing this and thought it was good. I recall thinking the writing was a mediocre, but everything else being quite solid.

I mean, things just randomly happen, characters are flat to unrealistic and the story doesn't really go anywhere. The only good character exits halfway through for mostly just shock value. I'm truly baffled by this film.

It’s funny. I feel like there are two very different ways people are hating this film. And both are correct.

It’s hilarious. This film sucks ass.

One of the Under the Gun editors hopped in my mentions to defend it. That was unpleasant.

i thought the characters in the movie were all complex, interesting, different, and weren't written stereotypically like one would excpect. I remember that being my biggest take away from the movie. Even the general concept i found to be interesting. Direction was solid, subject matter interesting, atmosphere was great, and yeah the writing was mediocre.

im not letting you guys suck me in. I thought this was a 7.5/10 or 8/19 type movie, nothing more, nothing less...and the backlash is clearly coming from an 'overrated' tone more than anything. This hatred didn't exist a month ago.
