Dude, same. It’s crazy to think that I went from listening to them non stop for two months straight to not listening to them at all. They have been one of my favorite bands for years and one would think that it would be really hard to cut them out, but I haven’t even really noticed? It is very very bizarre. Maybe one day I’ll return to them but right now it’s like I don’t have the need to.

Y'all truly do need to remember a lot of people choosing to still listen to this band are survivors themselves. Don't get so overzealous that you end up tearing down the groups you're supposed to be championing

I got in the car 15 mins after my post and can’t get it out had JUST started, whistles hadn’t been begun yet. Eerie.

  4. Listening to the band privately and supporting or championing the band publicly are very different things. This seems easy enough to differentiate.

But how else can we demonstrate our moral superiority? How can everyone know we're good people without us constantly telling them?

So maybe this is off base, but I base my actions towards an abuser on the wishes of their victims. Victims of other abusers don't really factor into for me.

Sure but that's not really the discussion I don't think. I saw someone say something about how everyone listening or maybe they said supporting this band is an idiot or something, yeah a lot of them probably are but I personally know more than one person who still listen that have suffered worse abuse than anyone I know and if your personal choice is that you won't listen or support that's fine but I'd be careful tearing down every other person who hasn't reached your same conclusion. I think a lot of people who think Jesse is innocent or think what he did wasn't that bad deserve to be talked down to. But I think people who know the severity of what he did and don't make excuses but still choose to listen or support, however slight that number may be (I know it's not zero though) shouldn't be the target. You could draw a distinction between listen and support sure but at this point what is there even to do to support a band who isn't touring and is half a year removed from their last album? So it's mostly just people choosing to still listen I think. Idk I'm just thinking out loud right now trying to tie my thoughts together. I think people can inadvertently be harmful to victims without knowing it and I don't like seeing that, not Jesses victims but other victims don't deserve it regardless

Yes...but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts

Brave woman, courageous words. Thank you for continuing to post these accounts long after the original break. They have helped shape the direction in how Mrs. and I will approach speaking to our daughter when she is older about red flags in male behavior, and being assertive in her own respect.

Guess that's really the only thing Brand New has to offer at this point: a sardonic lesson.

I can understand your take. I guess to me, I don't choose to have these past behaviors be the definition of the band altogether.

That’s fine, but the band has a past tendency to stick by Jesse for monetary reasons, which is pretty morally shitty. All indications show they’ll do that again in 2018 to wrap this up.

And they’ve been totally silent instead of condemning this behavior, in the present time. So that defines them now.

y opinion differs on the band and their public relations so I won't comment...but I don't know any of the future touring will be true nor that they stick w him simply for the money

It’s all in this thread or sci fi thread somewhere. But basically has to do with stuff with Derrick and them continuing after that point

Yes, everyone should be on board to abandon a ship of a steady career in music for over a decade when they find out one of the members is involved in an affair. Clearly means the entire band is full of pieces of shit with no morals.

Though it was okay back before the story broke on Jesse being involved with an underage girl and soliciting nudes.

In fact, I remember quite clearly being hushed up on this site and so were others when the Derrick/Tigers Jaw story would be brought up, and being told it’s not respectful to open that up for public discussion and to respect the band’s and everyone else’s privacy involved.

The brash, circumstantial opinions created on this site blow my mind sometimes.

you realize that Jesse was derrick's best man right... Also Derrick was in the band.. that def would be break up many many bands.

anyway I wasn't really taking a stance just explaining what was said. I should have just stayed out of this like I have been

Criticize the band for not stepping up when victims were being harassed online.

Criticize Jesse for his gross actions and inability to properly address the law he broke and address the victim.

Criticize the culture and misogynistic ideas/appeal that went unchecked for decades leading so many in positions of power to believe that behavior is warranted/acceptable.

    Stop making assumptions.

My responses aren’t directly to you. I needed context for what I was reading and you gave that. No worries.

I knew that. And I never not once thought Jesse’s actions were okay. When trying to discuss it probably 2 years ago, I was responded to in the forums being told to “not make assumptions” and “we don’t know the full story” and “out of respect for the band” blah blah. But now that Jesse has turned out to be shitty, it’s like everything about the band is free game to use as cannon fodder for people’s online opinions of people who didn’t do what Jesse did, and may not have known outside of the Derrick situation.

So if the band sticks out a 2018 tour, what should we make of that?

You know what’s an easy way to avoid people making assumptions? Clear the air and say something. They haven’t. So this is what happens.
