Musically, Heaven's Gate makes me think of What a Catch, Donnie so much.

this is part of why I think pitchfork is so bullshit tbh, I love a lot of their writers but their scoring system is dumb, exact decimal places is just ridiculous. All scoring systems are dumb though

one of my professional musician friends thinks all scoring systems are inherently evil and i'm inclined to agree with him even though i participate in it knowingly

I used to care about artists I like getting good reviews from pubs but now I care way more about what their fan base thinks about things which is often not what critics think. Some critics are out of touch about how fans feel about certain bands tbh

Part of the reason I love this site and loved Absolutepunk is that even though there are reviews, they are by-and-large written well and thoughtfully.

If P4K reviews this, they'll definitely pan it. They'll call it disjointed, say it tries to grab on to current trends, but that they're 2 years too late and the styles are worn out. They'll probably pick apart some of the lyrics and paint them as cheesy. It won't matter because FOB fans prove time and time again that nobody will talk us out of loving this band.

I like the reviews here because there's no score. I don't really read them though.

Eh the exact number doesn’t matter just the general realm for me. As I said it’s more interesting just because most scores are editorial decisions as opposed to writers idea

  9. There are a handful of writers like Craig Jenkins and Ian Cohen (most of the time) whose opinions on albums ill read even if I disagree with their takes just because I like how they write for the most part. Most other album reviews are pointless in the age of streaming though

  10. Anyway I’ve decided that this is not the best Fall Out Boy album but I definitely put It alongside Cork Tree and SRAR. Not quite FAD or IOH but still great. Also I’ve decided that America’s Suitehearts is good now

Bishops Knife Trick is one of my least favorite tracks on the album, but then the bridge comes...that's one of my favorite moments on the album

More than a couple of these songs feel very Panic! at the Disco-esque to me. I don't mean that in a bad way, I just get some of the same vibes from the DOAB album. Not surprised either. Maybe it's just me though, I feel like I would have seen more people make that comparison.

if you’re worried that your writing isn’t being taken seriously because of the score, don’t leave a score. Pretty simple.

As far as Pitchfork reviews go: I love reading any review that meaningfully engages with an album (Chorus and Stereogum do that best on the Internet IMO). Pitchfork can randomly assign writers stuff that clearly is out of their wheelhouse (which is a problem every review site has), and those reviews can be egregious and borderline offensive when the writers don’t take it seriously. The snider reviews are obviously wrapped up in their brand identity and the way they established themselves as “above” and “in the know”, but some writers there can be fair and good too. Doesn’t make sense to me to dismiss the value of engaging with the good stuff because some of it is trash.

I honest to god think I’ve listened to it 20 times at a minimum today. Even my 9 year old told me it was a little too much and she loves fall out boy.

Bishops Knife Trick is so beautiful. I love that chorus, but that bridge...when Patrick sings "I just wanna let you break my brain"

    Oof...
