After seeing it with a music video I think this may be the song that blows up here

Heaven's Gate, after some more listening, is growing on me. Still feels a bit bland, but Patrick does put in one helluva performance on that track. I'm sure it's one that will continue to be a grower for me.

Having listened to none of the singles apart from from Young and Menace, and expecting very little, this record is such a pleasant surprise.

Fall Out Boy are great at such catchy "moments" in songs. For lack of a better sum up, the na na na na bit in Hold Me Tight Or Don't during the chorus is so good. And after mixed feelings on first listen, the drop bit in Young and Menace is another highlight.

Really pleased with how this turned out. Solid record.

I cannot believe people care about pitchfork or really any music criticism in 2018

when i first heard the singles as they were released, i wasn't the greatest fan of them; then on the drive in to work this morning i put the record on and i just fuckin JAMMED to the first half of this. I can't get the hooks of Hold Me Tight or Wilson out of my head all day today

Because some people like to read other people's thoughts on music. Why is that hard to understand?

this bums me out man but i guess i also get where you're coming from (the way ppl "care about pitchfork" is often not really about the writing)

That's not the same thing as music crit in the way I'm talking about. I get so much more out of talking about music on a forum and with friends than I ever have out of reading reviews, and I even used to write reviews

I stopped writing for a reason I think it's largely irrelevant, music crit as a whole that is. Feature stories and think pieces and such are great but I don't get reviews anymore

i aspire to be a music writer, i like reading their reviews and i like fob. there's not much to it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i will say that writing reviews sucks. i try as much as i can to treat it like writing an essay that happens to be about one album (that i’ve only spent a week with) (if i’m lucky) (these parentheticals are the depressing part, and often reviews feel like a thought dump of one’s barely formed first impressions)

  19. i think retrospective reviews are much more helpful than dime-a-dozen pieces on whatever was released that week. but i also don't feel a need to listen to every big release the moment it comes out so maybe i'm weird.

Over half the people who read your writing are only there for the score anyway. I hated it so much.

I hate reading reviews, I don't really care for anyone's opinion on music other than my own

  22. i dont blame anyone for wanting to quantify their criticism in some way, but i appreciate it more when they explain HOW they reached their score. when i did album reviews i would divide the number of songs i liked by the number of songs on the album and base a letter/star grade off that...

I like to hear other people’s thoughts on music, they often help me sort through my own. But that’s why I come to the forums, I’ve also been moving away from caring about reviews

it's cool to see artists i like get praise from big publications because that's surely gonna make a few people stop and listen. the score is the tl;dr that unfortunately a ton of people go for straight away, but if that's what's gonna make them want to listen then fine by me

in regards of pitchfork I’m generally more interested in the score because score has less to do with quality but where the publication thinks it should be in the current musical climate. always fascinating seeing bands that don’t get reviewed normally reviewed or the shift in scores between albums. some writers are good to read but it’s more a trend thing to me
