Probably not worth it but here we go:

The people making an effort to actively engange in the online discourse about a video game are all part of the vocal minority. The overwhelming majority of people that play games, or a game, don't do this. On top of that, it has been proven that people that dislike something (a game, a restaurant, an experience - whatever) are more likely to comment on it than people that like something. So yeah, vocal minority.

The vocal minority can be right of course. I think they're wrong about Mass Effect Andromeda and most of their reasons I've heard seems oddly uninformed about the actual game to me, BUT THAT'S JUST ME. Group think is real though. But maybe they're right. That's not the point of this post.

It's funny because Mass Effect is now a series that has had two games that have been heavily shaped by the negative vocal minority rather than the silent majority (which could be negative, but that's less likely given what we know about the behavior of people commenting on the internet - again, people are more likely to actively comment on something in a public way if they dislike it). I have been studying stuff like this as part of my consulting activities. A lot of companies are absolutely terrible at putting online feedback into perspective and it's bad for business and bad for their creatives. This is especially the case in the video game industry, because the loudest parts of its online community are notoriously toxic and/or unreflective of the mainstream video game consumer (whch is obviously a huge, very diverse group these days), a problem that is less of a thing (though certainly present) in other fields of entertainment - there's a reason it's gamergate and not literaturegate.

P.S. I don't deflect criticism. I have no need to have my taste/opinions validated. I can however disagree with criticism, even if it is widespread. It's not like criticism isn't undergoing a crisis in basically every field of entertainment. The reason I say that critics are wrong about this game when I occasionally post about it on this forum is not to make myself feel better about liking the game, but because I think the criticism keeps some people on here that would like it from playing it and some of those people MIGHT trust my opinion somewhat.

  3. The problem is Mass Effect: Andromeda launched a buggy mess, validating a lot of the criticism, though none of the issues affected the game itself, but it just looked and moved awkwardly at first and broke immersion, which is very important in a game like ME.

The ME you can buy today is very good and barely resembles that game.

I haven't played Andromeda yet, but I'm excited to. Hope it sticks for me. The opening scenes aren't as gripping as ME2's, but it isn't horrible either. It is a bummer though that it gets that kind of hate online. I know people who dismiss it just because "they heard it was bad". I think those are the kind of voices that annoy me the most.

That said I dislike the default character model. I don't want to do the Shepard I was using because that will take me out of the game. So definitely going to spend a full day making a new avatar again lol.

Oh yeah make an avatar, it's actually a pretty good character creator

Tbh for me graphics aren't that big of a deal. I'm playing through The Division and while the gameplay and graphics are solid, the missions are too linear for me to have full immersion in the game. It's always "go to this point and wait for enemies to surround you and kill them" every time.

Mission design and a gameplay loop that is as uninterrupted/smooth as possible is increasingly the thing I care about the most

I actually didn't know this at all, that explains why I fucking loved that game so much and didn't at all understand the hate, I didn't play it until like October

It was also exaggerated at launch. I had exactly one little bug. But I guess it varied. The pre-launch version was very rough apparently, which they did send out for reviews.

Peoole didn't just complain about bugs though, but about everything.

  11. Moosey you know I'm all about ALFM and I respect you, but my girlfriend was literally LOL'ing half the time when I played the game because the animations and faces were so bad. I had friends come over and I'll be so excited to show it to them only for them to question my sanity. :crylaugh:

At the core I still think it was always a very good game but boy did it ship 2 months too early.

Yeah that's true. I'm talking about gameplay breaking bugs, because people kept saying that the game is "broken", which at least wasn't my experience.

  13. oh no the game was fine, but you know, not to be a stickler, but with ME all that stuff is super part of the game imo

I guess, though I usually read the subtitles as fast as possible and hit the skip button ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like the relationships and the story, I even like the proper cutscenes in Bioware games, but I really don't need to watch two meat puppets stand in front of each other and talk, just give me the text and let me go back into the field lmao

It's why I hate when games have a dialogue skip button that skips more than the subtitles on the screen show

  17. yeah basically that what the whole problem in andromeda comes down to:

there's two types of cutscenes, the beautiful and elaborately hand-crafted moments where major story beats are presented in epic fashion; and the shitty procedurally generated exposition which is just 2 characters talking with bad animation and sub-par lip-syncing.

I think The Witcher 3 is one of a very few games where I can watch all the cutscenes without skipping

I skip that dialogue too once I read the subtitles. They're pretty though, slightly more "cinematic".

  24. The Witcher 3 is the polar opposite, I wish you could skip the game so you can watch the cutscenes haha
