Looks like a fun event, but I'm more excited for the Straight Jacket/Double Barrel VSOD release party on Friday. Maybe it's just because 2018 WWE is a far cry from those sweet vintage rumbles...but anyway, I'm actually gonna be at the release party with a buddy of mine so if any of you Chicago dudes are gonna be there, lemme know. So is Double-Barrel VSOD different than regular VSOD? Pain in the ass for me to hike in from the city on weekdays but with the Flats show sold out my Friday is now open.

Yep. Regular VSOD was just Deth's Tar aged in whiskey barrels for 2 years as opposed to the single year that regular Deth's Tar is. Double Barrel VSOD is 3% ABV higher at ~ 17%. The base oatmeal stout from those is moved to a second barrel as it's described in the event description above so it earns the flavor of two different whiskey barrels as opposed to one. I'm not sure my palate will likely be able to discern the nuances of the beer, but I'm still stoked regardless to try everything.

Oh, enjoy then. You know there is a crazy Jester King Tap Takeover at The Veil on Saturday. Probably gonna be packed but some super good stuff.

Oh wow. I had no idea. looks like I'll be going to the Veil on both Saturday and Sunday then. I want to try their beer but I'm stoked about the opportunity to have Jester King.

any idea on if The Veil's bottles will last until Saturday? it seems like their bottles lasting is kind of hit or miss based on what I've seen on their instagram.

Ughh I'm not really sure, they're releasing quite a few options today and their limits aren't too bad. If I had to guess they will not last to Saturday though.

well, that's kind of a bummer. seems like cans have been lasting the past couple of weeks so I'll keep my hopes up. do they do crowlers there?

also that line-up for the tap takeover is absurd. I'm sure the Veil will be absolutely crazy packed.

If you RVA guys could just send me all the Joose crowlers, that'd be great. Thanks.

They prepackage them sometimes and sell them, but not with any regularity. I doubt they will have any available Saturday or Sunday.

"Ease of understanding" that the beer isn't actually what we advertise it as.

i mean, i get it to a point. they're going after a different demographic that doesn't usually drink craft beer because people are more familiar with IPAs than IPLS. but idk. i'd rather not potentially insult my customer's intelligence.

it doesn't help that their beer and the restaurant they're associating with are mediocre at best, but i'm going to attempt to not let my personal opinions prejudice my judgment.

Yeah, it seems pretty clear that the way they're trying to differentiate themselves from the pack is by getting endorsements and partnerships and grow the brand that way rather than through unique product or word of mouth. Which is fine. But to your point, from a quality perspective not for me.

Favorite beers from my trip to Atlanta included: Creature Comforts Athena Paradiso (Passionfruit-Guava) and Koko Buni; Cigar City Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout; Orpheus The Ferryman and Noise and Flesh: Blackberry; Scofflaw POG Basement; Three Taverns Saporous, Rapturous, and Inceptus; and Wrecking Bar Double Barrel-Aged In Quad We Trust. The beer scene in Atlanta is really thriving!

Of all the breweries we visited in person, Three Taverns was my favorite for the combo of both great beer and great ambiance. The Brick Store Pub, while not a brewery, has great food, a great beer selection, and a neat vibe.

Also had the chance to try my first milkshake IPA (Scofflaw Goat's Milk) but I'm still processing whether or not I liked it...

It's A Secret To Everyone Prestigious

just noticed i'm not following this thread.
i'm trying to get more into craft stuff when i can/learn about all those terms to describe the qualities of beer
and one thing i can say is that it's hoppiness in beer i don't like. Malty stuff, i love; but i think it's beers with lots of hops (if that's how you spell it) that tastes gross to me.
i despise the aftertaste in most IPA's i've tasted, same thing with this Kellerbier i just opened from Sam Adams

Hop bitterness is one of the most polarizing things in craft beer. Seems like just as many people are obsessed with it as those that hate it. Though I do think it's something that generally grows on people that don't like it over time if they keep trying IPAs. During the original craft beer boom, there was a bit of an arms race among breweries to make the most over the top bitter IPAs they could, but in the last few years that pendulum has swung the other direction and the cool new trend is IPAs that focus on all the hop flavor without almost any of the bitterness. If you see anything being marketed has a New England/Northeast/Hazy/Juicy IPA or Pale Ale, I'd give it a shot as it'll be very different from what's turning you off from IPAs currently.
