the first vinyl I purchased was The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me at a Brand New show. It was a limited (400) tour pressing, and I just had to have it. So that was really what got me collecting I guess you could say.

The first vinyl I had was my dads old collection. The Rolling Stones, The Who, KISS, Zeppelin, etc classic rock.

A friend of mine used to have a "vibe night" where everyone would sit in his basement, drink beer, and listen to music.

It was mostly weird indie stuff, but one night he out on "give up" by the postal service and I knew right then I had to have a copy of it.

Then I slipped into the variant game and it was all down hill from there.

First record I ever purchased was a copy of "all out war" by earth crisis. I was 16 and I never actually played it until I was 25.

The first record I bought was the GK tour split The Wonder Years and the rest of that tour package did for the 2012 Glamour Kills Tour.

I got into records from my parents. They had their turntable & old records forever.
When I started getting into music my parents would let me play their records. I remember Steely Dan "Can't Buy a Thrill" as my first spin. My brother and I ended up breaking that old record player when we were playing ball in the house.

Fast forward to 2000 and Alkaline Trio was getting ready to release their 2nd full length. I seem to remember reading a studio diary of blog posts on their website as they were writing that record. |
I was so looking forward to it and waiting with baited breath that I took Asian Man up on a LP/CD combo they offered. Shortly thereafter my parents bought me a record player as a gift for some reason (crappy little Ion but we have to start somewhere, right) and I never looked back.
I rue the day I sold all my Alkaline Trio first pressings to help with a down payment on a car but such is life...

    Someday I’ll find me Prestigious

I don't even quite remember why I got into it, or what precisely motivated me to buy my first records on vinyl.

Oddly, my first record was a deluxe preorder of debut Fun. album on Clear Rainbow Splatter. I was only sorta/kinda a fan of The Format, but I guess I just wanted something fancy.

Within that same week in Summer '09, I bought The Alchemy Index on vinyl which must've been on a whim. Had no idea on it having any major value until a friend offered to buy it from me a few years later with an amount of money I found absurd. Probably my most valuable/valued release.

Fast forward a few years and I'd have a small record collection (maybe 10 records). I didn't want them to collect dust, so with barely any money and not much research, I bought a $30 Jensen from Amazon right before Major/Minor released. I realized rather quickly that the sound was off, and I wasn't doing my records justice.

Fast forward another five years, record collection has grown a good bit to just under 30 albums. Thrice announces TBEITBN and I decide this is the year I actually invest in a real setup. Having a lot of fun doing my collection justice with the Debut Carbon DC. Plenty of pictures and snippets into the process posted throughout this thread.

I'm quite thankful for all the tips this thread provided me to really make this little dream a reality.

I recently started collecting finally after my girlfriend got me a record player for the holidays...now up to about 10-15 records. Was looking at some records on SRC vinyl I wanted to buy.

I know they have a bad reputation about customer service in years past but I was wondering if that still holds true? Is it not worth ordering from there?

    Avoid SRC at all costs.

Suggest any alternatives? Like Sound Stage Direct?

  14. I have never once had a bad experience with SRC, despite hearing many horror stories. Every LP I've ever bought from them has arrived in a timely manner and in great condition.

  15. First LP I purchased was Career Suicide by A Wilhelm Scream

Last record I purchased was The Lack Long After by Pianos Become The Teeth

My vinyl purchasing has kinda slowed as of late, but I pretty consistently will purchase an LP if I go to a show and don't already own one. No shipping/tax and all funds go straight to the band's pocket so that's a plus haha

Don't buy SRC unless you have to, you can usually find the same things for cheaper with better customer service, also can find a place that has a better sense of morality

SRC has never done me wrong. I've ordered like 10 times, and it's always worked out.

For some reason my grandparents gave my parents one of those record/cassette/radio players that I think Crosley made and it just sat in our bonus room. Saw Is A Real Boy was on vinyl and it was like $12 bucks on interpunk so I bought it. It was green and orange and I loved it so much. That is was cool. Then started searching eBay for LTJ stuff and some of the bands I was into at the time (Early TWY, Fireworks). Just started to get hooked on the format for some reason. When I got my first place for a real record player (Crosley shorted during a power surge) and sort of just started going to record stores all the time and buying all on vinyl. Unfortunately this coincided with its resurgence and eventually price increases.

My original goal was to get at least one variant of all LTJ releases. I gave up quickly on that.

Anyone have hidden gem places where they order vinyl online?

No Idea Records - Great distro, usually have something that is tough to find elsewhere. No Idea Records
Sold Out Vinyl - Specialize in rare and OOP stuff. BUY
Revealed Records - Mix of OOP stuff and reasonably priced variants. Revealed Records on Storenvy

I too have never had a bad experience with SRC, and don't know much about the horror stories or bad business practices. Their massive selection is a nice perk, though I do try to buy directly from the band if possible.

a burst and I'm awake now Supporter

I started collecting in 2001 for the sole reason that a lot of the releases I wanted to listen to (mostly late-90s skramz lol) were only available on vinyl, and of course we didn't really have the mp3 option back then. Trying to find a record player in Australia at that time was a nightmare, I had to go to some high-end audio shop and ended up paying more than I probably should have for an entry-level set up. Back then I had to order most all of the records I wanted from the No Idea distro (and they only took money orders and shipped via sea mail so things took three months to get to me), or from a small indie/punk record shop in Denver that just happened to do international mail order. I haven't collected consistently since then, I've dipped in and out a few times over the years as I've run out of space but I always seem to get pulled back in somehow.
