  1. I mean, not to gloat but my iPhone 6S is about a year and a half old right now and it runs super snappy.

I had my iPhone 6 from October 2014 until the end of this past November. It worked with no lags or issues until I did the software update for iOS 11. It was a bummer in the sense I wanted to go a little longer, but I think it was pretty reasonable all things considered. It's expected that the original battery would hold less of a charge and that it would compound with a more intensive operating system. I am happy with my X though. It's a really nice phone.

Why bother? The level of delusion and reality distortion in this thread is comical, but par for the course.

So the iPhone shuts down randomly under heavy load with a degraded battery. Sounds like a design flaw that would be hammered mercilessly if it were anyone else. But somehow it gets spun into a perfectly acceptable justification for secret throttling on the most popular phone line for years on end?

Unless other manufacturers are engaging in similarly secretive practices (which will come out soon, and likely would have already since the Apple story broke), no one else is doing this. Lots of conflation here from superficially tech savvy Apple fans who can't wait to high-five the next uninformed quip from a fellow "I've personally used a non-Apple PC or phone for 8 minutes total since 2008" zealot.

FWIW, I have given lots of the more popular smartphones a fair shake with in-store demos. The Pixel 2 line literally feels snappier and more responsive to me than iPhones when I'm trying to be as objective as possible, and you can find video comparisons that unanimously support their being at least on par. Samsung is the only major player to whom the lag/responsiveness critique has felt relevant for years now.

  4. It's weird when people that have no idea what they're talking about say others are delusional.

It's a waste of everyone's time to go through line-by-line and show the many factual errors, so, how about you just not post in the Apple thread? Seems better for everyone.

I use a PC every day at work and trust me, I'm not delusional when I say I want to throw it out the window as soon as I sit down.

  6. Had to fix an issue on my GF's mom's computer when we were over there for the holidays, and I do tech support for the city where I grew up still that's all PCs and Windows of various ages ... and they can all die a fiery death.

The friend/family rule is I won't help with phone tech support unless it's iOS. I should move this to macOS too.

There were only a few places where factual errors would be applicable, so please, indulge me.

As I understand it, the fundamental issue (as claimed by Apple) is that the iPhone will shut down if the current drops below some threshold, and this tends to occur well before the battery is really "dead" with older batteries. Giving Apple all benefit of the doubt, they addressed this by throttling the CPU on phones with degraded batteries.

My only relevant claim is that no other major phone or laptop manufacturer does this, running either Windows or Android, to anyone's knowledge thus far.

Claims you and others are making about Android being "unresponsive" and getting slow updates, or Windows performance degrading over time (highly dependent on your OS drive type and using common sense to avoid malware/background performance hogs), may have truth to them. But they're different issues, and aside from the possibility that Android OEMs are intentionally withholding updates, they don't entail companies purposefully concealing design choices that could be associated with planned obsolescence.

Best case: there's a subtle design flaw that Apple compensated for by slowing down $750 phones as their batteries degrade normally with time. Not the end of the world, but they absolutely should've been transparent about it from the day the first update with this "feature" was pushed.

  8. Not true. There were fundamental misunderstandings of what actually is going on and you made multiple factual mistakes because of it.

That's because they just shut down. You can believe that's the right thing for a phone to do: just die and shut off on someone. I don't.

I didn't say they were the same issue. This is very simple reading comprehension.

Here's the article from when 10.2.1 was released back in February:
Apple found that sudden spikes of activity to the maximum power draw could cause older batteries, which had some mileage on them, to deliver power in an uneven manner, which would cause an emergency shutdown of the devices. Brand new batteries would not be affected, but as most phone batteries run through charge cycles they get less effective (this is a well-known byproduct of lithium-ion technology and one reason everyone wants to get rid of it as soon as someone figures out something better) and more susceptible to these kinds of triggering spikes.

And, one more time, I'll repeat: this isn't a design flaw.

I was contemplating buying a Macbook to replace my 2 years old Asus laptop that starts getting a flickering screen as soon as I put it on battery. Not sure I'll get one yet though.

I love Apple products as much as the next guy (have an 8+, MacBook pro, and Air 2) and have used/sell Android products with my job. I know you think Android/Windows products are dogshit, but was just wondering if it's a long fall from high in the apple kingdom of perfectness? lol

Okay, sorry. I just get frustrated when I see people just so loyal to apple or Samsung and put down other operating systems etc because of whatever not liking it or trying it once and saying it's bad from years ago. Idk I'll stop now I'm sorry

  13. I don't understand why anyone keeps saying "only trying it once" or "years ago" ... I work with various operating systems (computer and mobile) on a weekly basis.

So with Apple cutting the price of battery replacements, I should definitely get my 6S battery replaced, no?

  17. Worth at least getting it tested to see what it's currently at. If you're having a issues with it (had it for a few years) then definitely

Main thing I've noticed lately is that if I've been using it outside in the cold, even for a little bit, the battery drains rapidly and will power off around 15-20%. Granted, it has been between -10 and 10 degrees here in Wisconsin the past two weeks.

  19. Might be worth looking at then, extreme cold will always impact these kinds of batteries to some degree however.

Yeah, I figured it's likely more so due to the extreme cold we've had, but might as well get it looked at.

Apple is not the only company making good devices, and believe it or not, what works for some may not work for others. Everybody’s needs and tastes are different. That’s why these OS wars are stupid.

Pretty sure I’ll be taking advantage of the battery switch for my SE. I haven’t noticed any slow down but the battery has declined quite a bit recently, and still got 6-7 months til I can upgrade.

  23. This is like the most self evident statement ever: "people's need and tastes are different!" No shit. Why does everyone pretend like they don't know this? Better yet, why does anyone come into the Apple thread to talk about other shit? Go talk about your ugly phone with people that like them. It's like running into a Vikings' bar yelling "Go Packers" -- just go away.
