i know some folks in here were recently talking about movies available on youtube - i watched this one today and thought it was fascinating. it really deserves a restoration, the cinematography is excellent and the effects are very surreal/bizarre. it is quite good.

Bloody Disgusting is really pushing praise for The Woods. I like Wingard a lot, so I have big expectations for this one. But BD has a history of putting a ton of praise on mediocre movies because they have a personal relationship with them. Basically any director from V/H/S is treated like a king with their reviews.

Saw it for the first time a few months ago. Fan-freaking-tastic. Kidman does a wonderful job in it.

Just saw The Purge today...guess that fits in here. I liked the basic premise but the way they led into it was so blah.

I haven't seen the original, but Anarchy is pretty good

  7. I'll always watch the Purge movies but I'll never feel good about it, haha. Dumb fun. I wish they wouldn't try to be smarter than they actually are, I think the self-seriousness makes them less enjoyable.

I really liked Frank Grillo's character in the second Purge movie. That's about the only good thing I can remember about it though.

Yea, it's an interesting premise but I think its small budget limited its scope. As ChaseTX mentioned, I enjoyed the sequel better so check that out. Not sure about the third movie based on the trailer.

Just watched The Hallow. Pretty fun creature feature. Not to be confused with The Hollow, which I ended up falling asleep to. Some logic gaps kept it from being really great, but it's definitely worth the watch.

  13. You're not the only one who slept on it, haha. Highly recommended. Actually one of the most fun zombie movies I've ever seen. Like, 28 Days Later is my favorite zombie/horror movie of all-time, and I like this for all the opposite reasons haha

Has anyone watched The Witch yet? Thoughts?

  15. I saw it in theaters and very much enjoyed it. Be forewarned though that the reason a lot of people were walking out is because it is not an easily digestible jump-scare movie. It's a slow-burning period-piece that focuses more on atmosphere and visuals than anything else.

  16. Loved The Witch. Takes a bit to adjust to the thick accents at first. Some people thought it was going to be a more straight forward horror movie or heard "It's the scariest film ever!" and were disappointed.

I watched Green Room last night and thought it was pretty great.

I guess an Exorcist TV show is coming via Fox.

Loved the Witch...will be buying it when it comes out here in like a week or whenever it is. Had an issue with the language at first, but it came together after about 20 minutes or so.

Didn't mean to triple quote but while I caught up on the thread, these all stood out to me haha
could these films be any different? Kill List isn't at all gratuitous and is near perfect. Dont see the correlation here
the difference with Ti West is the hour of build-up is actually good, not all slow burns are the same.

I mean, he obviously wanted her to suffer as psychotics generally do. He could have walked in and killed her, but he made it clear he wanted her to want to die first which is part of his game. You're assuming his motive is simply to end her life which a)isnt always the case and b)wouldnt make for much of a movie

Just watched this (Hush) last night and thought it was excellent. High Rise was great but I need a re-watch to try and make sense of the second half. Also really liked Southbound, flawed but a ton of fun.

Kill List and A Serbian Film have their "holy shit" ending in common...that's about it. But still, most people that have seen one of these have seen the other.

No, what Ti West does is not interested in the least bit. With the exception of a few minutes of The Sacrament, NOTHING happens leading up to the climax; unless you count mindless banter and "humor" as "something happening". Watch Bone Tomahawk if you want a good slow burn.

I just didn't buy Hush. The killer didn't seem unstable enough to kill without a motive. I mean, did he know her or did he just stumble upon this house in the middle of the woods? He called her by her nick name, but was that after he saw swiped her phone? If not, how did he know that name?

He knew the nickname because he was listening to her Skype call. He also killed the neighbor first. He was just killing people who were home alone because he could.

Yea ok I wasn't sure about the nickname.

So it was a Funny Games or Strangers complex, gotcha. Still, when it comes to home invasion I prefer some motivation like Kidnapped or Mother's Day (2010).
