I think Christian has come out and said that Soft Animal and Opening Mail are about his grandmother's passing, but some of the other songs are about an ex. I must be honest and didn't put too much weight on his personal meanings. The lyrics transcend personal experience and reach at universal human emotion/experience. Like really good poetry, Christian's lyrics tend to be about what lies beyond the content--beyond imagery and storytelling. He knows how to really turn phrases and images into something all-encompassing.

yea definitely one of my favorite writers.

 

I’ve always read this record’s main theme as finding beauty, happiness, and goodness in the naturally occurring world as a means of moving past seemingly insurmountable grief.

 

I’ve said it in this thread before but everyone here should read Dream Work by Mary Oliver. It’s referenced in the lyrics of this album many times and it’s clearly where Christian got most of his inspiration from.

It's infectious. I can't help but move with it.

 

Two Deliverances was one of my least favorites when this album came out but it has definitely moved its way up in that ranking.

 

Pretty sure Two Deliverances is my favorite The Hotelier song

 

Even thinking about this album immediately brightens my mood. Absolutely infectious positivity.

 

Seriously. I was in a not so great place when this came out and it helped a ton. No other record feels like this one.

 

Both albums are phenomenal give me one more and I’ll call them my favorite band

 

I really want to see them tomorrow but driving down to Cambridge in the snow will be a nightmare and I’ve already seen them twice this year.

 

They already have 3 phenomenal albums tho~

 

Sometimes I actually prefer It Never Goes Out to Home

Title Track and Weathered are so damn good.

I love poetry but had never read her until now and it's 100% because of this record - this is beautiful
