Now I Know This World Isn’t Spinning Just For Me Prestigious

Alright, write up time. First up:

    @Nate_Johnson
    Mastodon- Emperor Of Sand
Let me start by saying that I had never listened to this band before and that’s because I was told I wouldn’t like them. Digging into this album, I can see why I was told that by people who know my music taste. I liked the guitar intro for the opening track a lot, and then the album erupted. This is not a bad thing by any means. I listened to the album twice, and I hate to say that I don’t think this album is for me. That’s not saying it’s bad, quite the contrary I can say that it’s a good album. The musicianship in the songs is great, and there are some very, very skilled guitars in every song. You can tell that the band members know their chops. I think where the album loses me is the vocal delivery, it airs more on the size of heavier than I usually listen to. There were some tracks that stood out to me that I can see myself revisiting. ‘Show Yourself’, ‘World To The Wise’, and ‘Andromeda’ are tracks I could see myself throwing on a Mix Cd or a play list. However I don’t see myself returning to the album as a whole, which is a shame, because I can appreciate what they’re accomplishing on this album. 6/10

Next, the Recs by @Mister Lyrical

The Wonder Years- The Greatest Generation
First of all, can I say I now completely regret not having listened to this band prior to this. I knew of them, sure, but I had never gotten around to giving them a chance. It was always “eventually I will”. This is my first exposure to the band and I can say that I fell in love. Listening to this album four times over the past day, I am hooked. The opening track ‘There, There’ set the tone nicely for what was to come. Every song was very emotional, melodic, and catchy. Relatable too. The lyrics are just as up to snuff with my music tastes as the music itself, and this album is definitely something I can see myself listening to on a night time drive alone. ‘Passing Through A Screen Door’ continues the momentum that the opening track set up and it never falters, all through the 13 tracks is a fun time. Along with Screen Door, the songs I found myself jamming the most are ‘We Could Die Like This’, ‘Dismantling Summer’, ‘Raindance In Traffic’ but basically the whole shebang. I will probably be diving into this band a looooooot more. By far one of my favorite Recs I have gotten in this club to date. 9/10

Bring Me The Horizon- That’s The Spirit-
Okay I’m not going to lie, I have heard OF this album and band before. My fiancé is really into them, so I knew a handful of songs from this band, a couple of which were from this album. That being said I’d never actually ‘listened’ despite her always saying I’d love them. His performance at the Chester Bennington tribute got me more interested. Well I can say I do in fact love this album. ‘True Friends Stab You In The Front’ is definitely my highlight of the album, and I have played it quite a bit on the drives to work the past couple of days. Ollie is a skilled vocalist, and the music goes to that line between soft and hard that I like with similar bands in this genre. My other favorites were ‘Follow You’, ‘Avalanche’ and ‘Run’. Luckily my fiancé owns this album so I have already ripped it onto my MP3 player and it’s going to be staying on there permanently. Like TWY, I can see myself listening to more of their discography. This is literally the type of music I like along with pop punk. Idk why I was so stubborn to check them out. 10/10

And last but not least, @Drewski

Fucked Up- David Comes To Life

I have NEVER heard of these guys. Period. Diving in blind, I was honestly surprised when I heard the intro and following track on what I was listening to. It wasn’t what I expected them to sound like for some reason. I hate to say it but it I wasn’t really a fan of it. I couldn’t tell you why either. I think it may have been the vocals, the same problem I ran into with Mastodon. I liked the song structure, I liked the guitar and the in your face sound. I did dig quite a bit of the album, but I liked it in a way I’d have to be in a mood to listen to it. I don’t think it’s something I could just throw on for a daily basis listening. I liked ‘Queen Of Hearts’ a Lot. Also dug ‘Running On Nothing’ And ‘Served Me Right’. I can see myself maybe listening to this once in a blue moon as I did kind of like it, but I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan. 6.5/10

    Trophy Scars- Alphabet. Alphabets
Ok this was a cool album. This was different too. Vastly different from Fucked Up, this band was a rock band but seemed to experiment with including some trippy vibes and some heavier rock. And I liked that! It’s an in your face type of album that hits you heavy from the get go and doesn’t stop. I liked the song titles, as funny as that sounds, but each song title is named either by repeating a word like ‘Assistant. assistants’ or ‘Alligator. alligators’ or something conflicting like ‘Yes. No.’. The vocals are screamed a lot, and while I usually more like a mixture of scream/sung vocals, the vocalist of this band did it in a way where it wasn’t grating and in fact it sort of added to the experience. I could actually see myself revisiting this one. I listened to it a couple times, and I found it fitting on interstate driving oddly enough. 8/10

It's a shame he just does not match up in any way live. His vocals are so fucked and weak that he's basically a hype man to the band with the keyboardist singing most of the melodies and him just shouting at and amping up the crowd. Still really fun live show despite that though.

    Great reviews.

It’s too bad you didn’t like Mastodon but I can totally understand why. Even some metal nerds and purists have a hard time with some of their albums.

I am glad you liked Bring Me the Horizon. I can’t really get into their older material. If you like them and we trade again, I have a band you might like.

Nice, glad they were both hits, albeit a quasi-hit and a direct hit.

I definitely see your points on David Comes to Life, that album is a LOT of sound and fury to take in at once, especially with Damian's delivery. That being said, I always feel guilty chopping that album up and listening out of order because it is a concept album that tells a story at the end of the day.

Oddly enough, I have actually seen both of these albums played in their entirety live and both shows were epic. The real cherry on top though...Damian shoved the mic in my face during "Serve Me Right" so I could scream along. That's me at 2:58 screaming "AND PUT IT IN THE GROUND!" Considering it seems like Damian was forgetting some lyrics, I'm glad I could help the man out haha.

I didn’t pick up it was a concept album, I like concept albums (The Starset one I recommended you is one btw). I’ll have to revisit it and look at it from that angle

I discovered this album...I don't even remember how, but long after its release (Spring 2010) during one of the happier times of my life (studying abroad in Florence, Italy). It was a weird dichotomy being so content with my life, yet this very dark, gritty album was the soundtrack to my 30 minute uphill walk to campus along a single file road built into a mountain with trucks, scooters, and buses whizzing by me. I remember it all super vividly like it was yesterday. Will always be a very important album for me.

In my experience shoving the mic in someone's face is frequently an "I need to catch my breath" tactic hahaha
