I mean, Luke was being used by the Emporer. He WANTED Luke to kill Vader to fully commit to the dark side. And, you know, Vader was his father.

So, him not killing Vader served several narrative functions.

Simply because it wasn’t a regression for Luke to spare Vader doesn’t mean the same would be true for Rey wherever her arc ends up.

 

I know I wish we had some breathing room in the casino to take it all in.

Those pre production shots months ago of all the creatures in there made it look like Star Wars heaven for me

 

Roughly?

• OPENING CRAWL: Guerilla warfare rebellion going on all over the galaxy, as people who were inspired by Luke's stand on Crait stand up to the First Order in whatever way they can. The Rebellion is leading small raids on First Order prisons to try and add to their forces, while the First Order finishes construction on a superweapon that could end the conflict once and for all.
• The First Order's aims under Kylo have become completely nihilistic. What purpose does ruling everything when you're fundamentally unhappy? Their new weapon will use the tech from TFA, but on a scale that can reach systems across the entire galaxy through hyperspace wormholes. Ren wants to destroy everything with even a hint of resistance. Total submission, nothing less.
• Kylo's cut himself off from Rey after the events of TLJ, and she's off on Ahch-To repairing her lightsaber and delving into the Force readings of the Journals of the Whills. She's drawn to that Dark Side hole again.
• Poe, Finn, Rose, and co are leading a raid on an especially heavily guarded armory/shipyard/prison planet to save Maz and other people. The whole planet is a maze of cages and weapons and guards. The planet guards are not working with the First Order directly but sell them a lot of the weaponry (similar to what was seen in that ship in LTJ) and call them in once they realize they can turn a profit.
• On the run from Hux and First Order troops after breaking some people out, they stumble upon Benicio Del Toro. Finn wants to kill him, but he says he's heard about the First Order's superweapon from other prisoners and knows a way to defeat it. They take him with them, evading the First Order and losing fellow soldiers.
• Rey dives into the Dark Side cave with her lightsaber and has another weird meta vision. This time it's her and a vision of Kylo in an endless mirror, with no discernable way out. She is trapped.
• Space battle on the way off the prison planet, Benicio tells Finn and co that if they can shut off the hyperspace wormhole when the superweapon fires, it will destroy the whole system that the superweapon is in (and ifso facto the superweapon). Poe laments that they don't even have the forces for an attack run.
• Maz reveals a beacon that the raids have used to communicate with each other... those Rebel Alliance rings as seen in TLJ. She says they can be tracked and if they call upon those with hope, they will heed the call.
• Force Ghost Luke comes to Rey and they have a chat. She calls upon the Force and shatters the mirror. The cave crumbles, a metaphor for existing outside the balance of the Force.
• They all meet up on an outpost near the superweapon's wormhole creator. Exposition dump.
• Rey is able to break through the jam and contact Kylo. He reveals that he's not going to pick and choose systems to obliterate... he wants to destroy everything in the galaxy. They have until the sun rises (how the weapon gets its power) to stop them.
• The First Order realizes they were there and they're getting massacred in a space battle. The Falcon takes a hit. The beacon works and thousands of ally ships come out of nowhere. It doesn't turn the tide but it evens the score.
• Rey senses a disturbance in the Force on an abandoned moon near the planet, takes her ship there.
• Finds Kylo just sitting on rock, watching the battle and the pain he's wrought. He's not there to fight. He's in pain and alone.
• Rey tries to reason with him and they fight. She gets the upper hand, he tells her to kill him and that it doesn't matter anyway.
• Rebels destroy a super star destroyer with Hux on it, but lose the space battle to destroy the generator as it charges up. All seems lost.
  
• Rey uses the Force to move the moon in the way of the superweapon. They both are hit in the blast as the remaining Rebels jump to hyperspeed away just in time. The First Order is obliterated.
• Rey and Kylo end up in a place that looks like the mirror cave from earlier, but this time they're not mirroring each other, they're just alone. Kylo breaks down and talks about how he just wanted to feel like he had a place of his own, how he was special not because he was a Skywalker or a Solo but because he was himself. They talk about what it means to be "one with the Force" and how they would do things differently if they could. Rey has Kylo put his hand on the ground and feel the Force around him. The mirror shatters.
• Sad funeral for Rey / celebration that the Rebels won. Finn finds the Journals of the Whills and (somehow) Rey's lightsaber among her things. He looks off into the night sky as Force Rey looks on with Luke and Kylo.

 

I am excited about the Blu-Ray release for this reason.

God dammit

 

I'm just jumping in here now so maybe this has been mentioned before, but I really think Rey could kill Kylo with no problem at this point. I think the point is how different she is than Luke. Luke is terrified that Rey didn't even try to resist going down the pit to the dark side, but when she does, it doesn't tempt her even a little bit. She realizes basically immediately that it won't give her what she wants. The reason Luke can't kill Vader is because he does feel himself drawn to the dark side. Everyone thinks of the Skywalkers as heroes, but really Leia is the only one who has never had a true struggle with feeling pulled to the dark side. I really think this trilogy will end with an end with an end to their bloodline and an emphasis that there isn't really a "chosen" one or a special bloodline - there are just people who make choices. Or something like that.

 

Wow.

 

Also at some point during the movie BB8 will do a human-like reaction and it will be super cute.

Yeah, doesn’t seem like they would enjoy many movies

 

if anything ship Rey/Fin so we get an interracial relationship in the world's biggest movie franchise with the bonus of sending some alt-right'ers into spontaneous combustion

 

Benicio Del Toro's character is back?? Lame. And force ghost Luke? So predictable. And you're just rehasing RoTJ there with the celebration/force ghosts looking on at our heroes. 3/10 you ruined my favorite franchise.

I.... think they're already going the interracial romance relationship route if you watched the movie.

 

As for Rey, I don’t think she needs a romantic partner. For some reason I think she makes sense being solo.

What I don't get is

Why are people mad about Star Wars having "lasers bending" in a science fantasy movie (or whatever it's classified as)

But Hideo Kojima can release a trailer with A BABY IN SOME GUY'S THROAT and the hype levels are off the charts

 

Like "Ahh yes this is logically acceptable"

 

No Sci-Fi Animals.
